What happens after "happily ever after"? This is the question that Jennifer Donnelly explores with great gusto, told from the perspective of one of Cinderella's "ugly" stepsisters. Isabelle is wracked with guilt over her treatment of her stepsister Ella and in enormous pain after cutting off her toes to make a glass slipper fit--to please her mother. And at the same time, Fate and Chance are battling for Isabelle's soul. This is a glorious woman-powered caper which warms the heart and soul at once. Read it, tear up, and fight on. ( )

Actual Rating: 4.5 stars

Now that is the sort of character growth I am talking about! I genuinely enjoyed every bit of this book. In fact I may raise my rating in the morning but I have a tendency to overrate when I’m still on the high of finishing a book and I’m trying not to do it. But oh man. This book had action, drama, a splash of romance, some meddling gods/demigods/whatever you want to call them, and a protagonist who rose up to the person she wanted to be rather than the person life wanted her to be (and if that doesn’t make any sense then read the book and you’ll get it.)

Y’all know I’m always here for ladies who don’t care about what society thinks women should be. Isabelle and Octavia were maybe villains, but they were molded into villains by a parent and environment that sought to take away everything they held dear. Ah! I can’t talk about it anymore without giving the entire story away.

I’ll just end it by saying this felt very much like Stardust (the movie. I haven’t read the book yet, don’t judge me, I’m getting there.) ( )

A four star book but I'm irritated by the presence of quasi-mythical agents. This is a personal beef and others may not be bothered by it. ( )

"You're a playwright, sir?"
"Not one bit," the marquis said. "Never even put pen to paper before. But I'm always doing things I can't do. Otherwise, I'd never get to do them."

The summary for this really undersells it - I was pulled in more by the cover than the summary, but if I'd known what it was really about I'd be all over it instantly! It's more about a war - one thundering its way across France, and one (with plenty more charm and magic) between the personifications of Chance & Fate and a fairy queen. Cinderella is merely the familiar backdrop.

This was really fantastic. Full of wit and gritty emotion and it had me writing down plenty of quotes:

The small dark hours are the undoing of many. Candlelight throws shadows on the walls of our souls, shadows that turn a mouse into a monster, a downturn into disaster.
Should you ever decide, in those small dark hours, to hang yourself, well, that is your choice.
But don't hunt for the rope until morning.
By then you'll find a much better use for it.

I'm just sad that I don't have enough to really pin down - fantastic characters, great atmosphere, and some especially it did a wonderful job giving everyone a little bit of sympathy among their wickedness without seeming sappy or heavy-handed. I'd heartily recommend it. Just missing some words to really pin down what made it quite so special, though it definitely was. Special and fierce and clever.

"Can't you see that the courage to risk, to dare, to toss that gold coin up in the air over and over again, win or lose, is what makes humans human? They are fragile, doomed creatures, blinder than worms yet braver than gods." ( )
