Isabelle is one of Cinderella's ugly stepsisters, who cut off their toes in an attempt to fit into the glass slipper; but there is more to her story than a maimed foot, for the Marquis de la Chance is about to offer her a choice and the opportunity to change her fate--there will be blood and danger, but also the possibility of redemption and triumph, and most of all the chance to find her true self.… (mere)

I try to express only my most honest opinion in a spoiler-free way. If you feel anything in my review is a spoiler and is not already hidden in spoiler brackets please let me know. Thank you.

I was expecting something a little different when I decided to buy this book at a book fair at my daughter's school. This was so much better. It was more than a retelling. It was a completely new addition to the story. I loved it a lot. I like this take on the step-sisters.

The characters were so interesting. I loved how Isabelle's personality changes slowly throughout the book. This book shows that girls don't need to be pretty. They can be beautiful in there strength, courage, and love. To follow your conscience and be yourself, even if society says that you should be someone else.

The only thing that was a little too much for me was the beginning. Very gruesome and made me cringe inside, but it is nice that it followed more along with the Grimm version than the Disney one.
I'll be following this author and looking forward to reading more of her work.

How I choose my rating:
1* Hated it. I had to force myself to finish it.
2** Didn't like it. I didn't hate it but not sure why I finished it other than for some closure.
3*** I liked it. I had some issues with it, but as a whole it was good. I probably won't reread ever, but there is a chance I might finish the series. (If part of one) But if not it's not a huge loss.
4**** I really liked this book. Maybe not a work of genius, but highly entertaining. I might reread this, and I will finish the series. (If part of one) I would recommend to those I know hold interest in this book's content.
5***** I loved this book. I found little to no issues with it at all. I will be rereading this and probably more than once. I will finish the series and reread it multiple times. (If part of one) I will recommend this book to EVERYONE!!!!

What happens after "happily ever after"? This is the question that Jennifer Donnelly explores with great gusto, told from the perspective of one of Cinderella's "ugly" stepsisters. Isabelle is wracked with guilt over her treatment of her stepsister Ella and in enormous pain after cutting off her toes to make a glass slipper fit--to please her mother. And at the same time, Fate and Chance are battling for Isabelle's soul. This is a glorious woman-powered caper which warms the heart and soul at once. Read it, tear up, and fight on. ( )

Actual Rating: 4.5 stars

Now that is the sort of character growth I am talking about! I genuinely enjoyed every bit of this book. In fact I may raise my rating in the morning but I have a tendency to overrate when I’m still on the high of finishing a book and I’m trying not to do it. But oh man. This book had action, drama, a splash of romance, some meddling gods/demigods/whatever you want to call them, and a protagonist who rose up to the person she wanted to be rather than the person life wanted her to be (and if that doesn’t make any sense then read the book and you’ll get it.)

Y’all know I’m always here for ladies who don’t care about what society thinks women should be. Isabelle and Octavia were maybe villains, but they were molded into villains by a parent and environment that sought to take away everything they held dear. Ah! I can’t talk about it anymore without giving the entire story away.

I’ll just end it by saying this felt very much like Stardust (the movie. I haven’t read the book yet, don’t judge me, I’m getting there.) ( )

A four star book but I'm irritated by the presence of quasi-mythical agents. This is a personal beef and others may not be bothered by it. ( )
