When a peculiar letter arrives inviting Armand Gamache to an abandoned farmhouse, the former head of the Sûreté du Québec discovers that a complete stranger has named him one of the executors of her will. Still on suspension, and frankly curious, Gamache accepts and soon learns that the other two executors are Myrna Landers, the bookseller from Three Pines, and a young builder. None of them had ever met the elderly woman. The will is so odd and includes bequests that are so wildly unlikely that Gamache and the others suspect the woman must have been delusional. But what if, Gamache begins to ask himself, she was perfectly sane? When a body is found, the terms of the bizarre will suddenly seem less peculiar and far more menacing. But it isn't the only menace Gamache is facing. The investigation into what happened six months ago--the events that led to his suspension--has dragged on, into the dead of winter. And while most of the opioids he allowed to slip through his hands, in order to bring down the cartels, have been retrieved, there is one devastating exception. Enough narcotic to kill thousands has disappeared into inner city Montreal. With the deadly drug about to hit the streets, Gamache races for answers. As he uses increasingly audacious, even desperate, measures to retrieve the drug, Armand Gamache begins to see his own blind spots. And the terrible things hiding there.… (mere)

I'm still enjoying these novels even though they're getting increasingly difficult to believe and are becoming a little predictable. Great for listening to on long walks, though, and I like some of the new developments for some of the regular characters. ( )

Kingdom of the Blind is a story of secrets. The book kept its feeling from beginning to end. It brought some closure to the previous Chief Inspector Gamache novel but still left new questions. Kingdom of the Blind received a solid four stars in this review for a solid story and desire for the reader to read the next book. ( )

I really needed this book right now. As I read it I was reminded again of how comforting it is to visit the world of Gamache and the fictional town of Three Pines. I just loved the way friends in this book intuitively KNOW exactly what each other is going through, what they are feeling, and, most importantly, what they can do to help. The moments of simple but wonderful kindness were such an antidote to the world of 2020. There is a story and the plot is interesting but I had one quibble with a plot point that was important for the story but just felt so unrealistic that it bothered me. Briefly. Then I realized that I never read these books solely for the plot, I have other thrillers that work on that level, but here I'm there to live with the characters for 300 pages and enjoy that company. The themes here are good too, much of the story is bracketed by a quote from Marcus Aurelius “It is not death that a man should fear, but he should fear never beginning to live.” Truly that rings true right now. There are people "Whose grip on grievances was so tight it strangled reason." Sounds a lot like the 2016 election to me. And an absolute truism, "Entitlement was, she knew, a terrible thing. It chained the person to their victimhood. It gobbled up all the air around it. Until the person lived in a vacuum, where nothing good could flourish." There is humor too of course, and I love that after 14 books the line "Things were pretty dire when Ruth was the healing agent" can make me laugh out loud. I am amazed at how much the character of Ruth does get to me because if you try to describe her it just sounds ridiculous. The care and though that has gone into creating all these people continues to amaze me. I now have one more book to read before I'm all caught up! Then I'll be ready for the next book that will come out this fall. ( )

Wow! This is the first time I have been blown away by the Acknowledgements. Louise Penny is absolutely one of the best writers. Her soul comes through in the pages of her works. She is a masterpiece. ( )
