There are two types of evangelicals: pietists and confessionalists. This is a short (but excellent) book comparing and contrasting the pitfalls of pietism vs confessionalism. The authors are quick to point out that piety itself is not a bad thing, but that it should not be the central concern of Christianity. In short, pietism is an ideology that is preoccupied with piety, whereas confessionalism is an outwardly focused orientation, primarily about what has been accomplished by another and how we go about benefiting from this accomplishment. Consider this book both an exhortation to that which is good, and a warning against that which can seem good, but be harmful to the growth of a Christian. ( )
