From the first time he was stopped and searched as a child, to the day he realised his mum was white, to his first encounters with racist teachers - race and class have shaped Akala's life and outlook. In this unique book he takes his own experiences and widens them out to look at the social, historical and political factors that have left us where we are today.Covering everything from the police, education and identity to politics, sexual objectification and the far right, "Natives" will speak directly to British denial and squeamishness when it comes to confronting issues of race and class that are at the heart of the legacy of Britain's racialised empire.… (mere)

I mentioned this book to my 22 year old son and he said that going by Akala's lectures he felt the book was more for a white person trying the learn about the black experience than for a black man trying to navigate the ruins of the British Empire. I don't agree, I learned a lot about this book and am hoping that I can get my sons to read it. I was surprised by his experience of racism at school, I am at least a decade older and was, I guess, lucky that my school years were marred more by complete lack of interest rather than overt racism and what can only be termed as abuse.

The book really made me think about how readily we accept the language used to portray the black experience in mainstream media and how my media bubble shapes the way I think and feel about race in this country (England). ( )

I feel like I can't give a "proper" book review on this book, but I'll give it a go.
Akala, in Natives, covers how race and class have been addressed and held up in (as the title suggests) the ruins of the British Empire. Akala's book was such and interesting read, and it was fascinating to read it with the current backdrop of the drama currently going on in the BRF with Harry and Meghan. (Slightly off-topic, but I 100% support Harry and Meghan as they go through their struggles.) I had a hard time setting down this book, which is why I finished it so quickly. I really want to re-read this book, however, so that I can try to find things I may have possibly missed in my first read. ( )

A thoroughly researched, well-organized, lucid, and highly readable examination of racism in the post-colonial UK, but with broader applicability to other first-world cultures. An important analysis of racial issues in contemporary societies. ( )

This is without doubt one of the best books I have ever read: Informative, intelligent, world view changing.

Every teacher, politican, and voter should read this book. It will move, anger and inspire in equal measure. I know I am better for reading it. ( )
