"'Does your job make a meaningful contribution to the world?' David Graeber asked this question in a playful, provocative online essay titled On the Phenomenon of Bullshit Jobs. He defined a bullshit job as 'a form of paid employment that is so completely pointless, unnecessary, or pernicious that even the employee cannot justify its existence, even though as part of the conditions of employment, the employee feels obliged to pretend that this is not the case.' After a million views in seventeen different languages, people all over the world are still debating the answer. ... Graeber, in his singularly searing and illuminating style, identifies the five types of bullshit jobs and argues that when 1 percent of the population controls most of a society's wealth, they control what jobs are 'useful' and 'important.' ... Graeber illustrates how nurses, bus drivers, musicians, and landscape gardeners provide true value, and what it says about us as a society when we look down upon them. Using arguments from some of the most revered political thinkers, philosophers, and scientists of our time, Graeber articulates the societal and political consequences of these bullshit jobs. Depression, anxiety, and a warped sense of our values are all dire concerns. He provides a blueprint to undergo a shift in values, placing creative and caring work at the center of our culture, providing the meaning and satisfaction we all crave."--Jacket.… (mere)

This book extensively explores the concept of "Bullshit Jobs." It highlights the pay inequity where low-paying jobs, often occupied by women and minorities, provide significant societal benefits, whereas higher-paying jobs contribute less and sometimes cost more than they are worth. The book concludes by briefly highlighting the benefits of a basic living income. ( )

Highlighted quotes from my reading:

"Our actions are caught up in relations of caring. But most caring relations require we leave the world more or less as we found it. In the same way that teenage idealists regularly abandon their dreams of creating a better world and come to accept the compromises of adult life at precisely the moment they marry and have children, caring for others, especially over the long term, requires maintaining a world that's relatively predictable as the grounds on which the caring can take place. One cannot save to ensure a college education for one's children unless one is sure in twenty years there will still be colleges-or for that matter, money. And that, in turn, means that love for others-people, animals, landscapes-regularly requires the maintenance of institutional structures one might otherwise despise."

"Leslie told me of studies that demonstrate that any system of means testing, no matter how it's framed, will necessarily mean at least 20 percent of those who legitimately qualify for benefits give up and don't apply... 60 percent of those eligible for unemployment benefits in the United Kingdom don't get them."

"Thousands of people are maintained on comfortable salaries in air-conditioned offices simply to ensure that poor people continue to feel bad about themselves."

This book contains a lot of good ideas but at the same time, the author assumes and suggests a lot of things that are backed by nothing other than "feelings" and testimonials of random people. ( )
