Matthew's Gospel presents Jesus of Nazareth as the Christ long promised in the Old Testament. To interpret it, author Jeffrey Gibbs employs a narrative approach that examines the literary structure of Matthew's unfolding message and interprets individual texts with a careful eye to their relationship to that overall structure. Gibbs expounds the Gospel in light of the original context and audience for whom Matthew wrote. The themes that have received particular emphasis include: Jesus' mission to save His people from their sins; The reign of God in Jesus; The Son of God's vicarious role as substitute for Israel and for us; Jesus' fulfillment of the Old Testament; Jesus' ministry of mighty word (preaching, calling disciples, teaching) and mighty deed (healing the sick, exorcizing, raising the dead); How God's grace in Jesus now comes to us through Word and Sacrament; Eschatology'that the end times have begun already with Jesus' ministry and the Christian lives with joyful hope in the promises yet to be fulfilled on the Last Day.… (mere)

This one's the first of a three volume commentary on the book of Matthew. I found it to be a very readable book, with good, thought provoking teaching. In comparison to other Concordia Commentaries, it seems like Dr. Gibbs focuses more on the thematic structure of the book than the nuances of the language. Of course, the last few commentaries that I've read have been covering the Hebrew scriptures, so perhaps that makes all the difference. Whatever the reason, I'm eagerly diving into volume 2.

Over the years I have found this volume to be one of the most useful for preaching of any commentary I own. Gibbs gets to the heart of the text with clear understanding that is very practical and preachable.

With only the first eleven chapters in Matthew completed in this volume, my initial assessment on the work is that many conservatives in the Lutheran or Reformed church camps will probably find much to like in this commentary, while dispensational interpreters and perhaps others will find some of the theological positions unsatisfying. However, regardless of one's theological positions on matters of continuity/discontinuity, the nature or offer of the kingdom in relation to Israel, or the relationship of Jesus' teaching to the OT, the commentary is a good resource for any serious student of Matthew who has some background in working with the Greek NT.
