FoxPro applications for database management are still in use but with recent Windows operating system updates, it is time to make decisions about continuing to use these applications. Visual FoxPro is well-suited for several types of applications: replacing aging FoxPro 1/2.x desktop applications; creating new desktop applications that don't need a Web or mobile component; small client-server systems that can use the 6.01.8629.01 version ODBC driver to connect to the database (this one shipped with VFP 6.0.); and reasonably simple Web applications. VFP has the advantage of fast development turnaround, low cost of deployment, fire-and-forget installation, and rock-solid performance. In this book the author discusses issues in using Fox 1/2.x applications and he offers a detailed description of what it takes to move a Fox 1/2.x app to VFP and compares that to what it would take to move to another development environment.
