It’s a nicely plotted, well paced murder mystery. Three traumatized children of the victim survive and somewhat unrealistically are left to fend on their own, and their coping mechanisms make up a good part of what’s intriguing about the book. The relationship between the two detectives working the case adds some levity. It’s a good work of genre fiction that I think many mainstream readers would enjoy. I enjoyed it as a change of pace. However, I cannot fathom what in the world it is doing as a Man Booker nominee. It’s not literary fiction. It doesn’t deal with any subject of importance other than the result of trauma which has been done many, many times before. It doesn’t even have a great twist that would make you think, “wow, that was special.” If this is shortlisted, I’ll be absolutely floored. ( ) With all the exception reviews, I was expecting something captivating. It was not. A young man is left "in charge" with his very young sisters in a car on the side of the road while their mother walks down the road to a phone booth. Years later, with his mom gone and his father so devastated that he abandons the family, he's still in charge and trying to support them by breaking into houses. He thinks he's discovered how his mother was murdered and he tries to find creative ways to engage the police without leading the police back to him. There are some interesting characters but the plot was a very slow burn. I would not characterize this as a thriller. Some scenes in the book seemed unrealistic (walls and tunnels of newspapers) and I'm still puzzled how Jack suddenly found his dad who then returned home like nothing happened (did I miss a chapter someplace??). I was hugely disappointed in this book. It stretches credibility at times, but ‘Snap’ is still a hugely entertaining thriller that kept me gripped and grinning from the first page to the last. So many crime novels nowadays take themselves way to seriously and are infused with a bleak misanthropy, so it was a joy to read something with such a great sense of fun and such likeable characters. It centres on a young burglar, Jack, and his attempts to find out who murdered his mother. Along the way there’s a fair amount of pathos at the plight of him and his siblings, some great police procedural detail, a bunch of entertaining (and often amusing) characters and a plot that is twisty enough to keep anyone happy. It’s the first Belinda Bauer book I’ve read, but I liked it enough that I immediately bought another.
