“The Day you begin” by Jacqueline Woodson is a beautifully written story about the first day of school for Angelina, an adorable girl of color. Like most new kids, she is worried about meeting new friends and being accepted. As she enters her classroom she finds students of all different races and cultures. As they start sharing stories of their summer vacations, Angelina feels awkward because she didn’t go away on a vacation. She spent her summer reading books to her little sister. Once she shares her story she realizes that even though they are all different, by sharing their stories they find connections.

The beautiful illustrations by award winning Illustrator, Rafael Lopez really compliment this sweet story. The words flow on the page and the illustrations bring it all to life. Woodson is a dynamic and powerful writer. This is a great read aloud for the first day of school for PK-2 students. ( )

This book teaches children acceptance as it tells the story about students who do not always feel included. The Day You Begin talks about many events and scenarios that children experience, but do not verbalize. Woodson uses beautiful poetic language and striking illustrations to tell this story. I would recommend this book to young students to teach them about poetry. It will also teach students how to be kinder to one another. ( )

The Day You Begin is a realistic fiction book telling the story of students accepting their differences and finding things in commons with their classmates. This story is full of themes like: social issues, diversity and prejudice in the classroom, and embracing your differences. The illustrations reflect the words of the text and help further explain the meaning of the text. The illustrations and the text are both very straightforward and complement each other. This story is moving and motivational for students. The issues of diversity, prejudice, and discrimination are something very real in our society. This is a story that students should be showed to show that it is ok if your look different from someone else. This book touches on some of the issues/struggles that students face in the classroom, and these struggles are things that students can find a way to relate to. ( )

This story portrays a young African American girl who can’t seem to find her sense of belonging. On the first day of school all of the students discussed that they all traveled during the summer while she only read. She then realizes that reading is the same as traveling and began to find her place. ( )

I loved this book. Jacqueline Woodson is an incredible author and poet. This book beautifully portrays the importance of individuality. The conflict, students who feel like they do not fit in, finds a resolution, teaching an important lesson about not only sharing your voice, but also friendship. The poetic rhythm of this book makes reading feel fluid and easy. The fluidity of the illustrations is a beautiful reflection of the text. The point-of-view makes reading the book feel like a personal experience. ( )

In The Day You Begin, Rafael López’s illustrations marry with Jacqueline Woodson’s text to create the perfect visual experience of growing from an outsider to finding the courage to connect with others “a little like you [but] so fabulously not quite like you at all.”

Woodson’s gentle, lilting story and López’s artistry create a stirring portrait of the courage it takes to be oneself: “There will be times when you walk into a room and no one there is quite like you until the day you begin/ to share your stories.”
A bright jewel-toned palette and clever details, including a literal reflection of a better future, reveal hope and pride in spite of the taunting. This reassuring, lyrical book feels like a big hug from a wise aunt as she imparts the wisdom of the world in order to calm trepidatious young children: One of these things is not like the other, and that is actually what makes all the difference.

Award winning team Jacqueline Woodson and Rafael Lopez have created this new picture book and it is even more perfect than we anticipated.
The soft, evocative illustrations introduce us to characters who live these situations alone, before realizing that they can connect across, and because of, the identities and experiences that make them unique.
