This is the highly anticipated second novel by Angie Thomas, the author of the #1 New York Times bestselling, award-winning The Hate U Give. Sixteen-year-old Bri wants to be one of the greatest rappers of all time. Or at least win her first battle. As the daughter of an underground hip hop legend who died right before he hit big, Bri's got massive shoes to fill. But it's hard to get your come up when you're labeled a hoodlum at school, and your fridge at home is empty after your mom loses her job. So Bri pours her anger and frustration into her first song, which goes viral...for all the wrong reasons. Bri soon finds herself at the center of a controversy, portrayed by the media as more menace than MC. But with an eviction notice staring her family down, Bri doesn't just want to make it--she has to. Even if it means becoming the very thing the public has made her out to be.   Insightful, unflinching, and full of heart, On the Come Up is an ode to hip hop from one of the most influential literary voices of a generation. It is the story of fighting for your dreams, even as the odds are stacked against you; and about how, especially for young black people, freedom of speech isn't always free.… (mere)

5* Angie Thomas has done it again. I loved how real this book is and how well Angie is able to articulate and show the issues that are present in areas of poverty throughout the U.S. She does so well at showing the different layers to poverty and how all areas of their lives are affected. Bri was a dynamic character and while there were quite a few moments that I was cringing at her impulsive words and actions - it made her that much more believable. I love that she had a strong family dynamic present in her life even though it might not look the same as what people might think of when a person says "family".

The narrator of this audiobook is fabulous (I think she also narrates Allegedly which I've listened to and loved). She captures the story so well and has such a great ability to have distinguish the different characters and tones of the story.

I really enjoyed this story and will continue to read anything Angie Thomas puts out. ( )

Sixteen-year-old Bri wants to be one of the greatest rappers of all time. Or at least make it out of her neighborhood one day. As the daughter of an underground rap legend who died before he hit big, Bri’s got big shoes to fill. But now that her mom has unexpectedly lost her job, food banks and shutoff notices are as much a part of Bri’s life as beats and rhymes.

I was afraid it wouldn't be as good at THUG but it is. he does extraordinary things with language to create/portray this community. She doesn't talk down to readers or get didactic even though it is an "issues" book. Her characters and relationships are imperfect and complex. She cares about them and makes us care about them too. Loved it. ( )

"Who are you?" she [Jay/Mom] repeats. "Of the millions and billions of people in the world, you're the only person who can answer that. Not people online or at your school. I can't even answer that. I can say who I think you are." She cups my cheek. "And I think you're brilliant, talented, courageous, beautiful. You're my miracle. But you're the only one who can say who you are with authority. So, who are you?" (p. 397)
You see, I'm headstrong (and petty) like Grandma. I'm creative like Granddaddy. I speak my mind like Mom. I might be as strong as her, too. I care so much that it hurts. Like Trey. I'm like my dad in a lot of ways, even if I'm not him. And although Kayla isn't family (yet), maybe she's a glimpse at who I could be. If I'm nothing else, I'm them, and they're me. That more than enough. (p. 425)
