"It's been a long time since I've been so thoroughly engrossed in a novel . . . Instead, the beloved woman begins speaking. Of a secret past and castle ruins forgotten by time. Of a hidden chapel that served as a rendezvous for the French Resistance in World War II. The author took a fictional story that spanned generations and made it come alive. Her main characters had in common their perseverance and the inclination to put self aside to look out for the greater good. "The story we're writing in this life is a gift from God and we can't afford to waste a moment of it." So true. ( )

This is the story of how one woman found more than she ventured out to discover about her family, her history, and herself.

Ellie was a determined young woman set on delivering some semblance of peace to her ailing grandmother, while taking the first step on a journey she never knew was intended for her. The places she sees, the people she meets, the connections she makes, all create a spectacular backdrop for a story that will steal your heart. The long forgotten castle adds a certain air of mystery. The family working the surrounding lands brings a palpable heart to the seemingly silenced emotional landscape. The forbidden nature of it all creates the challenge from which Ellie will not back down from, eventually granting her more than simply access, but a kinship of sorts with all that's transpired. It was wonderful following the ladies, both past and present, down the roads of their fated futures, and seeing the strength of character they possessed in times that were more than earthshattering, but heart quaking.

In the end, it was a grand adventure with spectacular views, a magnanimous leading lady no matter the time period she may be in, and journey of the heart you won't soon forget. For me, the hardest part was keeping the stories straight. Don't get me wrong, each stands on its own two feet with its own feisty (if unexpected) heroine (of a sort) and a remarkable tale to tell that ends up connecting throughout the span of lifetimes, but in the moment, things would get a bit fuzzy...eventually though, things fell into place. Take a chance on waking this sleeping beauty and get whisked away by all the stories she can tell...

The beginning captured my attention, the middle was a little slow, but then the last 1/3 picked up again and kept me at the edge of my seat. I loved the connections between the three time periods: French Revolution, WWII, and present day. And the twists and surprises were magnificent. I think the plot was written very well. ( )

"The Lost Castle" was such a lovely story and I couldn't put it down once I started it. Three parallel stories revolve around a mysterious castle and vineyard tucked away in France's beautiful Loire Valley. I loved all the descriptions of the castle and its surrounds, and could easily imagine the beauty of the area.

It took a while to separate the three stories, but the author was a capable storyteller and I was soon involved i the intrigues, family dramas, excitement and romances that were taking place over the different time periods.

Each of the leading female protagonists were feisty, strong and heroic. I particularly loved Aveline, an aristocrat who was in hiding during the French Revolution, and Vi, who found herself hiding from the Nazis. Both their stories were filled with drama, devastation and tension. The story of present day Ellie lacked the excitement of the other two, but I enjoyed following her race against time as she tried to solve her beloved grandmother's secrets before she lost her forever.

"The Lost Castle" is my favourite sort of book. An historical read with romance, adventure, suspense and poetic descriptions. The three storylines blended beautifully together bringing both heartache and happiness to this reader. A touching read. ( )
