Anna Wright has rapidly developed a following across the UK for her print, collage work and paintings, following in the footsteps of Emma Bridgewater, Tricia Guild and Liberty as she takes her designs across stationery and homeware. She is now embarking on her third picture book for children. Anna brings humour, beauty and sophistication to this perennially popular Christmas hymn, with her signature style. Exquisitely rendered in pen, ink, watercolour and collage, The twelve days of Christmas are beautifully and playfully reimagined for today's readership - and have never looked so sumptuous. Although her third picture-book, The Twelve Days of Christmas is only the second I have picked up from Anna Wright, following upon the beautiful Magnificent Creatures: Animals on the Move!, which I greatly enjoyed. I was immensely excited, given my appreciation for this artist's work, as well as my interest in Christmas carol picture-books, to see it this past weekend at my public library! It is a lovely presentation of the carol, and one that is, in keeping with its creator's interest in animals, a little different. Here there are no human subjects. The eight maids a-milking are a litter of little pigs suckling, the nine ladies dancing are butterflies, the ten lords a-leaping are grasshoppers, the eleven pipers piping are rabbits, and the twelve drummers drumming are woodpeckers. Even the five gold rings, although they make it in, are depicted as the playthings of a group of frogs. This is definitely an animal-centric version of the carol, which comes as no surprise, given Wright's other titles.
I found this little edition unexpected, and absolutely charming. The artwork is gorgeous, and the choice of subjects creative. Recommended to fans of the artist, and to anyone seeking beautiful but slightly different picture-book presentations of The Twelve Days of Christmas. ( )
