The Coronation of Poppea (L'Incoronazione di Poppea) was Monteverdi's last opera, written when he was 75, and first performed in Venice in 1642. The opera tells the amoral story of the Roman Emperor Nero's love affair with the scheming and seductive Poppea, with evil triumphing over good, while the allegorical figures from the Prologue - Fortune, Virtue and Love look on. The story is sort of a Roman Book of Job. Love tells the other gods/anthropomorphic personifications to watch him win The Most Powerful God/Anthropomorphic Personification contest. Poppea, no better than she ought to be, has ensnared the emperor Nero - and everyone is going to suffer until she is crowned empress: her former lover, his current lover, Seneca, Nero's wife - everyone.
