While riding the subway home from the pool with his abuela one day, Julián notices three women spectacularly dressed up. Their hair billows in brilliant hues, their dresses end in fishtails, and their joy fills the train car. When Julián gets home, daydreaming of the magic he's seen, all he can think about is dressing up just like the ladies in his own fabulous mermaid costume: a butter-yellow curtain for his tail, the fronds of a potted fern for his headdress. But what will Abuela think about the mess he makes -- and even more importantly, what will she think about how Julián sees himself?… (mere)

OMG. I almost started crying at the reference desk. Beautiful illustrations and the spare text is expertly written. ( )

I know many people love this book, but it feel like cultural appropriation. There are so many better books written by queer people of color -- please check out those books instead of or in addition to this one, including "From the Stars in the Sky to the Fish in the Sea by Kai Cheng Thom" ( )

This book follows the story of a little boy who wants to be a mermaid. He wants to participate in the Coney Island Mermaid parade. This book has great emotional depth and shows the importance of self expression. So does Julian get to participate in the parade? Read and find out. ( )

Such a beautiful story for students from k-3rd grade. I love the inclusivity that this book portrays. It breaks some gender stereotypes; it teachers students that what truly matters is how you feel. It talks about being your true self, self love, and individuality. I believe this book is a great way to bring representation in the classroom. ( )
