This book explores the idea of time travel from the first account in English literature to the latest theories of physicists such as Kip Thorne and Igor Novikov. This very readable work covers a variety of topics including: the history of time travel in fiction; the fundamental scientific concepts of time, spacetime, and the fourth dimension; the speculations of Einstein, Richard Feynman, Kurt Goedel, and others; time travel paradoxes, and much more.… (mere)

very thorough, detailed, rigorous description of time travel -- in both the physical world and in science fiction; amazing compendium of time travel in literature and media

This is a spectacular book. Yes, it's hard. I didn't understand quite a lot of it. I hope to come back to it after reading some Feynman etc and see if I get more out of it. But even missing so much, it's a delightful treatment of time travel in physics, philosophy, and sci fi. And it's wonderful to read about such an imaginative concept from the point of view of a scientist who thinks it just might be possible. Delightful. And tons of ideas for other things to read, whether sci fi fantasy stories or academic papers. Loved it. ( )

Ever wanted to know why you can't go back in time and kill your own grandfather? A wonderful romp through time(!) which traces the development of time stories and their relationship to scientific and philosphical approaches to that most mysterious of subjects. There's also extensive appendices for those who want to delve deeper in the mathematical backbone, but the true fun is how the author takes us on a journey through a subject he obviously loves and is fascinated by.
