Pearl Buck is one of my favorite authors and the writing in this book is simply wonderful. She has a way of painting her characters innermost thoughts with such clarity and deep emotional wisdom. Unlike the other works I have read, this one was set in New England. The story was a bit sad: a struggle of a recent widow determined to live on her own terms, finding love, deciding how to approach those moments while staying true to her desire to love and be loved, yet doing the best for everyone. In other words, how to be a Goddess. It was difficult at times because I felt so sensitive to her feelings, but that is what a good writer needs to transmit to their readers. ( )

It is sweet to be loved, but to be able to love is to possess the life force. I love you. Therefore I am strong. Whatever my age, I am sustained by my own power to love.

A novel whose age shows...telegrams, utter failure of the Bechdel Test...but whose meditations on Love in its many, mutable manners are in the veriest sense of the word timeless. An "older" (43!!) widow is torn between a young man's desire for her and an older man's long-standing regard for her, her perceived duty to her children and grandchildren, and her desire for selfhood at last. Assuming you're familiar with the entire genre of women's fiction, you'll know if this is agreeable to you; I found it a rich, enfolding hoary-old-story larded with The Best Aperçus! ( )

After her husband’s death, 42-year-old Edith Chardman develops relationships with two very different men, one older than her father and one young enough to be her son. In the process she discovers herself and the nature of love.

Pearl Buck is fantastic when she’s writing about Eastern cultures, but she’s just ok when writing about Western cultures. There were several real gems scattered throughout the book, but for the most part, I didn’t really buy into a lot of her philosophies. This was predominately a character study of a character that I wasn’t that interested in. ( )

A Muse-poet falls in love, absolutely, and his true love is for him the embodiment of the Muse. In many cases the power of absolutely falling in love soon vanishes; if only because the woman takes no trouble to preserve whatever glory she gets from the knowledge of her beauty and the power she exercises over her poet-lover. She grows embarrassed by this glory, repudiates it, and ends up as either a housewife or a tramp; he, in disillusion, turns to Apollo who, at any rate, can provide him with a livelihood and intelligent entertainment - and goes out of circulation before his middle-twenties. But the real, perpetually obsessed Muse-poet makes a distinction between the Goddess as revealed in the supreme power, glory, wisdom and love of woman, and the individual woman in whom the Goddess may take up residence for a month, a year, seven years, or even longer. The Goddess abides.
