"A groomsman and his last-minute guest are about to discover if a fake date can go the distance in a fun and flirty debut novel. Agreeing to go to a wedding with a guy she gets stuck with in an elevator is something Alexa Monroe wouldn't normally do. But there's something about Drew Nichols that's too hard to resist. On the eve of his ex's wedding festivities, Drew is minus a plus one. Until a power outage strands him with the perfect candidate for a fake girlfriend. From the best man's toast to the bouquet toss, Alexa and Drew have more fun than they ever thought possible. But before they know it, Drew has to fly back to Los Angeles and his job as a pediatric surgeon, and Alexa heads home to Berkeley, where she's the mayor's chief of staff. Too bad they can't stop thinking about the other. They're just two high-powered professionals on a collision course toward the long distance dating disaster of the century--or closing the gap between what they think they need and what they truly want.."--… (mere)

Jasmine Guillory - The Wedding Date: Having just finished Act Your Age, Eve Brown, this was FAR too tame. #cursorybookreviews #cursoryreviews ( )

This novel is in the romance sub genre of "love" in the hook up culture of young professionals. It's a lifestyle I'm intrigued by but don't relate to.

It's a shallow, formulaic novel but also fun and diverting, and manages to be a little romantic. Alexa's positive personality works well - she's always happy and that helps create the easy camaraderie with her love interest that becomes the key to the romance.

Of course, she chooses to jump to an out-of-character misunderstanding, which reins in the romance, right on cue, just in case someone thinks that the path to love is a bed of roses.

Not sure why I would have borrowed this audiobook from the library, as I now see that I didn't like The Proposal or The Wedding Party, also by Jasmine Guillory.

Janina Edwards, the narrator, is a lovely reader but I just don't like her voice for this book. Something about the tone of her voice gives something to the novel that isn't there - a certain sentimentality? - and I don't think is meant to be there. It needs a harder edge. ( )

From the book jacket: Agreeing to go to a wedding with a guy she gets stuck with on an elevator is something Alexa Monroe wouldn’t normally do. She’s definitely not the spontaneous type. But there’s something about Drew Nichols that’s too hard to resist.

My reactions
What a fun, fast romantic read. I loved Alexa, who’s an attorney working at Berkely City Hall and trying to make a difference in the lives of the residents of the Bay area. I also really liked Drew, a pediatric surgeon who lives in Los Angeles. But they both have issues. Drew is commitment phobic, and Alexa lacks self-confidence, especially when it comes to her body image. Their path to Happily Ever After is complicated by their geographic distance, their own issues, and a few missteps common to many new relationships. But they approach all these obstacles as adults, which I found very refreshing!

Janina Edwards does a marvelous job of voicing the audiobook. She sets a good pace and sufficiently differentiates the characters wo that even when two females are talking I’m not confused about which character is speaking. ( )

The Wedding Date has received a lot of great praise since its release three years ago and on reading it, it’s easy to see why. This is a fantastic example of the contemporary romance genre with some favourite tropes like a meet-cute in a broken elevator and the fake date. But it also has a huge heart, dealing with issues of race, size and sibling guilt.

I initially read the second book in the series, The Proposal first because I couldn’t get my hands on The Wedding Date locally. It honestly doesn’t matter which order you read the series in as you’ll just have a knowing smirk on your face when Carlos (The Proposal’s hero) gives Drew a hard time during this book. It’s lovely to read the story of Drew and Alexa’s romance first hand as The Proposal doesn’t give a lot away – with good reason. Alexa is on her way to meet her sister when she gets stuck in a lift with Drew. They aren’t there for hours, but it’s enough time for some flirting and for Drew to spill that he’s in town for his ex-girlfriend’s wedding. To make matters worse, he’s dateless. Before the elevator is fixed, he’s got a fake girlfriend date in Alexa. But the problem is that they have a great time and get along really well. Suddenly, their fling is all about weekend flights from San Francisco to L.A. and back. Both feel that this relationship could be more than just good weekends, but of course they don’t talk through their thoughts and fears. It takes multiple arguments and miscommunication to reach the grand finale and their happily ever after.

That’s not a complaint, as The Wedding Date is a fun, well written read whether the leads are arguing or not. The conflict between Drew and Alexa makes the bond between them stronger and more believable (and how boring would a romance novel be without arguments where the couple talked everything through). It also results in some great dialogue and make up scenes. But this book tackles more than just romance. Alexa is Black and Drew is white. Alexa isn’t backward in asking Drew questions like if there will be any other Black people at the wedding. He realises that he’s privileged because of his colour and he consciously checks and reviews it. Alexa is also conscious about her size (she’s described as curvy) and how she looks to Drew. She is still a body positive heroine who isn’t giving up her doughnuts for anyone though. (There are a lot of excellent food descriptions in The Wedding Date including tacos, ice cream and cheese and crackers). Drew also has a history of breaking off relationships when things get comfortable and issues dealing with the illness of one of his patients. Alexa has unresolved guilt regarding her sister and she’s trying to make things right. But these things don’t drag the romance down, if anything they only make it stronger. Alexa is a wonderful character who is stronger than she knows and also very down to earth. She’s very relatable.

So if you’re looking for a strong, sexy read with a great heroine and good food references, look no further than The Wedding Date. It’s also got enough travel references to make you feel like you’re rushing to the airport too.

I had heard a lot about this book across Booktube and the Twitterverse before it’s release, so it definitely went on my TBR. But I also lowered my expectations because I had a feeling it wouldn’t be very “earth-shattering”. I am happy that it didn’t disappoint. The Wedding Date is based on the all familiar trope of fake relationship to falling in love and it is sweet, charming, flirty and enjoyable. It also has smart MCs who have their own loves with friends apart from their romantic life and I liked getting to know them on thie own turf.

There are some elements though that definitely stand out in the story which really made the reading experience wonderful. It’s an interracial romance, which is probably my first ever such contemporary read. It allows for a couple of interesting discussions about race between Alexa and Drew and it was great to see him acknowledge his white privilege and also realising that he had never thought about how things could be different from her perspective. Alexa does get a little insecure about her weight but for most of the book, I loved that she was confident, owned her body and really enjoyed her food. Ohhh God….. all the fast food they consumed definitely made me very very hungry 🙂 🙂 However, the best part of the book for me was that both of them had busy ambitious careers in different parts of the state and try to meet when they can on weekends, but never even consider that one of them may have to compromise professionally to make a life together.

This is a happy, feel good romance with wonderful characters that can be enjoyed in a single sitting, just don’t go in with a lot of expectations. ( )
