In this second book of the ‘Dark Servant’ series, it’s clear that high priest of the Lord of the Night, S’Rak, has gotten himself into more trouble than he anticipated. He left his home in the city of Okyro in A’filozenoi to travel to the “Sun Lands” to try to ensure the prophesy about beating the mysterious Unmaker and his powerful, monstrous army can come true. But the man he is supposed to protect is a spoiled little prince, the king turns out to be Rak’s biological father, and the servants of the Lord of the Night are seen as demons. Not exactly an easy start.

But that is not the worst of it. Rak faces the irrational demands of a father who thinks his oldest son has returned to become his heir, the ill-veiled jealousy of his half brother who is afraid Rak will take over, and the more or less hesitant advances of the captain of the prince’s guards. Add this to an assassination attempt, Rak’s need to sate his slave fires – whose cause is finally revealed – and overextending his healing powers, and the adoration of a slave, and this becomes an action-packed, suspenseful installment in Rak’s journey. Oh, and then he gets accused of murder, while all he did was help, and for a long while it looks as if his journey has come to a premature end…

If you like imaginative fantasy worlds with elaborate back histories and a theology all their own, if a courageous man who follows his calling without regard to his own safety is your thing, and if you’re looking for a read that is full of adventure, surprises, and some very hot sex, then you will probably like this novella.
