diverse teen fiction (Indians living on a reservation near US-Canada border, Niagara Falls)
Carson is about 17--a high school senior and Maggi is 15; Carson's story revolves around getting a band together to compete for a prize trip to NY (his ticket off the Rez) and Maggi's story revolves around her "romance" with a 30-something jerkwad (he's not as bad as some of them, but he's not great either) and her eventual realization that she wants more out of her relationship. Beatles' fandom (since this takes place in the late 70s post-breakup) winds throughout.
Note: this isn't a "clean" read--they don't end up going as far as Jim would like, but everything else is described in (thankfully sparse) detail. There are also some scenes with alcoholism and abusive parents. ( )

The book Give Me Some Truth by Eric Gansworth Mostly revolves around two people, Maggi Bokoni a 15-year-old who just moved back to the rez shack and Carson Mastick is a 17-year-old male who has always lived in the rez shack. The story starts with Carson Mastick’s brother Derek coming home from a bar. After coming home, he later leans into Carson’s room smelling like alcohol and blood. Carson gets mad at Derek since he was drinking alcohol in his car. Derek reveals to Carson that he was shot in the butt showing him a dark red spot on his butt. So, Carson helps his brother with his bullet wound. Maggi had just moved back to the shack from the city with her family Marie(sister), mother, Morgan(Brother). Maggi wants to try a different style of art instead of the one her mother has been giving her to do. The next morning at Carson's house he sees a battle of the band of the band's poster with a prize to NYC, so he looks for band members. So, he forms a band with Maggi a girl who moved back the rez shack, Lewis, and Doobie. Also, later that day the guy who shot Derek was on the news and was talking about how Derek deserved to get shot. Carson is entering his senior year, so he wants to make a mark on his last years before he must sit in an office. The group of four never actually practiced together, the first time they ever played together was in front of an audience. They assumed they were doing good since the audience was dancing to the song they were paying. The song they were playing was a song called Kaw-Liga by Hank Williams. After they finished playing, they were thinking of playing a Beatles song. That night Maggi went with her 35-year-old friend to an art gallery too look for a Yoko-Ono (John Lennon's wife). She ends up not finding any art from her in the Art gallery so, afterward Jim takes her to an Italian restaurant where they bother order pasta. Upon walking out of the restaurant she sees a bullet hole in a window and wondered if Derek deserved to get shot. Since the guy who shot him in the butt was stating that he deserved to get shot.
The next day at school they had to make a Thanksgiving feast so Carson and Lewis get stuck with making a turkey the main dish. They end up doing good with the turkey and he gets a good grade. After the class finishes the teacher wanted to talk to Carson about his grade and that if he doesn’t take the 11th-grade test he would be disqualified from the battle of the bands. So later that night he studies all night so that he could have a chance of going to New York City. In the finals of the Battle of the bands, Maggi tries to sell her creation of art which ends up getting her rich since a lot of Indians like the art piece. After the show, they ended up winning the trip to NYC which is close to Canada. MaggieMaggi decides to take her friend Jim instead of one of her family members and Morgan finds Maggi’s diary which states that she is going to lose her virginity to Jim after his bowling tournament. (the 35-year-old man) So when Maggi walks out the door Morgan calls Lewis and Carson and he tells them what Maggi is planning to do with Jim. So Lewis and Carson head over to the bowling alley where they find the guys truck who shot Derek in the butt. So Carson spray paints the truck. When Luis walks inside the bowling alley he is shocked to find out that everyone is crying and that John Lennon was shot outside of his apartment by Mark David Chapman who didn’t flee the scene. While Maggi was walking over to Jim, Jim told her to go back. Lewis saw Maggi and he was trying to tell her to come with him and Carson. She has a big fuss about how she is a woman and she make her own decisions. So she walks up to Jim and tells him that she needs his keys to get her bag from his car since she was going with Carson and Lewis. Outside the guy who shot, Derek steps outside and Carson confronts him and starts asking questions. Carson is about to have a brawl with the man until Jim screams wait. After that lewis just starts to hammer down on Jim after Jim said some threats about him. Maggi told everyone to go home and that she would call lewis once she got home. After that Maggi got into Jim's car and stated that she didn’t want to be with him if they are hiding their relationship. So Jim drove her home and Maggi kissed him on the cheek.

In my opinion, I' rate this story 3.5 out of five because the story has some romantic moments but, some of it doesn't make sense at times. Also, some of the grammar in the story isn't correct. The story is kinda confusing because it has multiple chapters where a character is a main character then the next chapter they aren't. It confuses the timeline of the events since one part takes place in the past and another chapter takes place in the future of that chapter. The only reason I can tell this takes place in the late 70s and the early 80s because john Lennon is alive in the current timeline of the book and because he dies in 1980.

I don't know anything about the Beatles, or John Lennon, or Yoko Ono, which is how I know I missed some of the more subtle stuff in this book. It was still incredible, though--well written and emotionally true from start to finish. I loved the dual POV. It fit better and contributed to the story more than any other multi-POV story I can think off offhand. ( )

As I read about Carson and Maggi, I marked one page after another. The truths in their lives made me laugh and made me cringe, too!

...I am pleased as can be to say that I highly recommend Give Me Some Truth!
