I give this 4.5. I really liked it. Theodosia was only 6 years old when she witnessed her mother being murdered by the people that invaded her kingdom. After that she became their trophy and used her to make a statement to any rebel forces. If they rebelled, she paid for it. Her people are enslaved and she is tortured. Those holding her hostage call her the ash princess, but she can no longer live like this. Her people need her to rise from the ashes and become the queen she was meant to be. I absolutely intend to continue this series! ( )

This book is one of my most anticipated releases in 2018 and I was very excited when I received this ARC from Netgalley.
I am very conflicted about my feelings after finishing the book. Theo/Thora is a captive princess who is mentally and physically abused by the Kaiser after capturing her kingdom and killing her mother. She tries to survive in the palace by suppressing her memories and trying to be obedient until she is forced to kill one of her own. This kind of situation should make Theo a very compelling character which she is for the most part, but not always. She doesn’t trust easily but sometimes, she also wants to trust and believe in her friend Cress and the Prinz Soren. She wants to question her faith but is also scared of its outcome. But towards the end, it looked like she is finally ready to accept her role as the Queen of her people and I do look forward to reading what she will do next.
I think the problem with this book is that the world building is not done enough. We don’t get to know how Theo’s kingdom was captured so easily despite having magic wielders or how the magical system even works. I hope this part is covered better in the sequel. There are also not any interesting side characters to root for. Cress is probably the only one I find intriguing enough because she seems capable of both compassion and cunning and the story sets her up for a very interesting arc in the next book. Prince Soren seemed kind initially but he also seems a little naive. Blaise and the other rebels didn’t leave any Impression neither did the Kaiser, who is just plain evil. The love triangle also feels forced and totally unnecessary.
Overall, I can say that the book was enjoyable enough that I want to read what happens next but I also hope that the sequel delivers more because this one did fall a little short of my expectations. ( )

I really liked it!

This book was amazing, what with a main character who is more or less a slave, but then manipulates everyone around her to not only escape, but achieve many other agendas as well ;)

So, what I loved: The manipulation. That was probably my most favourite part. The way she's manipulating Soren to fall in love with her, and overthrow his father, the way she tries to do the tries to manipulate the Kaiser and the court to believe in her illusion of complicity, the way she mostly succeeds in doing the same to Erik.....I just loved it!

I also loved the you-can't-trust-anyone way this folded out.

What I didn't love as much: Her manipulation of Soren. I know that's contrary, but I just really wanted him to be the love interest, and not Blaise. I just don't like love triangles, especially when it's in a series, and the triangle will most likely be there for all of it.

Almost everyone who I wanted to be good, namely Soren and Cress, turned out to be ......lets say morally grey. I don't know, maybe having read the kind of books I read, I just expected those two to be like the only-allies-in-her-prison, and having finished the book, I just don't know what I want from those two anymore.

I liked the moral greyness in this book, it was done very well. I also didn't love Blaise as a character, I just didn't.

Also, is this a dystopia? Because most of this book was what I expect from a dystopia.....the near constant hopelessness, but there being a way out, the almost depressing storyline (in some places only), the slave like-life she lives, the constant torture and discrimination, the ash crown.......all of it made me feel this was a dystopia.

One more thing, I love the cover. I just had to say it.

All in all, I loved it, and I'll be reading the next parts ASAP! I recommend it to anyone who likes fantasy, romance, love triangles, strong female characters, magic(only a little), court politics, and twisting storylines where you can't really trust anyone. ( )

I expected to love the audiobook version more than I loved the paper book, but it didn't end up holding the same appeal. It felt too long as an audiobook and I already knew the plot twists. I'm still excited to read the third book. ( )

I received with thanks an ARC copy of Ash Princess (Ash Princess #1) from Pan Macmillan & Netgalley.

This is my true and honest review of Ash Princess (Ash Princess #1) by Laura Sebastian. This is due to be published on 14th June 2018

This book is first in a new dark YA fantasy series. This book is emotionally heavy and with at times violent dark themes. The writing is beautiful and haunting, and this book will stay with me for a while. This new world the author has created is cruel and mesmerising all at the same time.

Please be aware that this book has trigger warnings for the following, Violence, Slavery, Abuse and Rape is hinted at.

Great book for fantasy lovers of dark YA high fantasies.
