This was very different from what I expected. I expected a regular trashy romance but what I actually got was some kind of teeny romance…

I wrote quite a bit more, originally, but decided not to elaborate because I’d very likely do this book an injustice.

14-year-old me probably would have liked this. Thirty-one years later, I simply found a book I’m too old for.

Had this book in my queue for awhile since it seemed like it was only available in the UK. But I was happy to find it would be available from my library in the US as an e-book. The premise of a deconstruction of a romantic comedy seemed like a fun concept. I am not into the rom com genre very much, either as books or as movies. So this seemed like it could be an interesting read.

While Audrey is working at the local cinema, she has to deal with life: her parents are divorcing, she just went through a romantic breakup of her own, her friends are changing and there's a guy she's working with, Harry. Harry is a major flirt and that complicates her trying to deal with other parts of her life.

This book was dull. I was surprised at how hard it was to read. Audrey is not a particularly interesting character and nothing about the story was at all compelling. I was mildly sympathetic over her parents, but I didn't care one way or another as to whether she got involved with Harry or not, didn't care about other aspects of the story, etc.

While I was interested enough to be curious to see how it ended, I can't say the payoff was worth the time spent. It's a pity, because it certainly seemed like a fun way to deconstruct some of the tropes, cliches, and other things of the romantic comedy genre, but this wasn't it.

Would skip this one. ( )

(thanks to netgalley for helping me get an arc of 'it only happens in the movies' by holly bourne)

when i first started reading the book, i had low expectations, considering it was the basic "good girl falls in love with bad boy" cliche, but i was pleasantly surprised. the author does an amazing job of making the book seem real, and so much more heartfelt than any other book. the ending made me cry because it was so perfect, it truly couldn't have been any better.

the characters were great, and it is almost like they're real people. audrey is so sweet and kind, but i can tell that she closed herself off after her parents began to have problems. i really love the variety of friends that she has. henry, as stated does act like an fboy, but he tries to change for audrey and support her. he has a bad rep, but he ends up caring for audrey so much.

the plot is quite clear from the very beginning, but it's the little things that add character to the novel. i especially liked the following quote from the novel : "love isn't just a feeling. love is a choice too." it was so raw, and really shows that the author has something to say. overall, this is a great book, and i highly recommend it to teens interested in ya contemporary novels. As much as I loved this book, I also didn't enjoy it as much as I hoped I would, partly because I kept having flashbacks to my own days of working in a cinema even though it was nowhere near as cool as Flicker. But like all of Holly's books, this one makes you stop and think about things in an entirely different way, and I did enjoy the journey it takes you on, esp the ending. ( )
