A great book with beautiful illustrations that children will enjoy. It was first published in 1941. I enjoyed the fabulous illustrations due to how distinct they are. This book has won a Caldecott medal for its illustrations. 80 years after it was first published, it is still widely popular. ( )

Make Way for Ducklings is a children’s book about a family of mallards that settle down in Boston. Written by Robert McCloskey, it won the Caldecott Medal award.

This is a classic children’s story, but I’ve got to mention that I’d never read it before now. As an adult I found it sweet and amusing so I can only imagine how kids might love this story. Mr. and Mrs. Mallard are looking for a place to build a nest and raise their ducklings. They find that place on an island in the Charles River where Mrs. Mallard lays eight eggs. I found the names for the ducklings hilarious, Jack, Kack, Lack, Mack, Nack, Ouack, Pack and Quack. A policeman named Michael at the park is friendly with the mallards and helps Mrs. Mallard get the ducklings to the Public Garden. And everyone lives happily ever after.

This is a big picture book and the sepia drawings illustrate the story well. They are dated however with the antique cars and the way people dressed, and I think that kids playing with iPads and video games, some will probably find this story too slow and boring. But it’s still a charming story for any child that loves animals and reading. I understand that Boston actually has a statue commemorating this book in the park. I found this a cute, fast read with great illustrations. A perfect children’s book that even entertained me. I give Make Way for Ducklings, 4 Stars

This beloved classic takes Mrs. Duck from the nest where she's nurtured her ducklings through various sites in Boston to the pond where the ducks will swim and find food. This is such a popular book in Boston that now there is a sculpture in Boston Commons of the Duck family on their way. ( )
