"A current, constructive, and actionable exploration of today's racial landscape, offering straightforward clarity that readers of all races need to contribute to the dismantling of the racial divide. In So You Want to Talk About Race, Editor at Large of The Establishment, Ijeoma Oluo offers a contemporary, accessible take on the racial landscape in America, addressing head-on such issues as privilege, police brutality, intersectionality, micro-aggressions, the Black Lives Matter movement, and the "N" word. Perfectly positioned to bridge the gap between people of color and white Americans struggling with race complexities, Oluo answers the questions readers don't dare ask, and explains the concepts that continue to elude everyday Americans. Oluo is an exceptional writer with a rare ability to be straightforward, funny, and effective in her coverage of sensitive, hyper-charged issues in America. Her messages are passionate but finely tuned, and crystalize ideas that would otherwise be vague by empowering them with aha-moment clarity. Her writing brings to mind voices like Ta-Nehisi Coates and Roxane Gay, and Jessica Valenti in Full Frontal Feminism, and a young Gloria Naylor, particularly in Naylor's seminal essay "The Meaning of a Word.""--… (mere)

I read [b:How to Be an Antiracist|40265832|How to Be an Antiracist|Ibram X. Kendi|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1560163756l/40265832._SY75_.jpg|62549152] recently. I think that's why SYWTTAR felt like a 3-star book to me. It's obviously treading the same ground and I preferred HTBAA by a lot. I imagine if I had read this first, I would've appreciated it more.

I listened to the audiobook and Bahni Turpin continues to be my favorite narrator. ( )

This is an excellent and concise book about so many aspects of race we may encounter in our lives. There wasn't much new here after having read a lot of other antiracist literature, but I think this would be a great starting point for someone interested in the topic. It certainly doesn't hurt to read this even if you are familiar, as it takes a while for some of these things to sink in and become second nature. I liked the recommendation to add the systemic implication of racist remarks to your rebuttal, so the reason a remark like "so and so group of people are always late" is harmful is very clear to the person saying it (it perpetuates a stereotype of lateness leading to fewer job offers and responsibilities, etc.). I recommend this book to every white person I know. They need to read it. GIVE IT TO YOUR RACIST FAMILY MEMBERS. ( )

Wow, this was my best read of 2020 so far. The book is well-written and organized, very readable. Learned a lot. Wish there were more books like this. ( )
