An Amazon Charts bestseller. Professor Theo Cray is trained to see patterns where others see chaos. So when mutilated bodies found deep in the Montana woods leave the cops searching blindly for clues, Theo sees something they missed. Something unnatural. Something only he can stop. As a computational biologist, Theo is more familiar with digital code and microbes than the dark arts of forensic sleuthing. But a field trip to Montana suddenly lands him in the middle of an investigation into the bloody killing of one of his former students. As more details, and bodies, come to light, the local cops determine that the killer is either a grizzly gone rogue...or Theo himself. Racing to stay one step ahead of the police, Theo must use his scientific acumen to uncover the killer. Will he be able to become as cunning as the predator he hunts--before he becomes its prey?… (mere)

Excellent murder mystery with a page turning plot and solid characters. My only complaint, and it's a minor one, is the the ending felt a little abrupt. ( )

Disappointing. ( )

This mystery was OK. I really liked all of the science in the book. Unfortunately the main character really annoyed me. He was constantly whining about himself and putting himself down. It was especially annoying since the book is in the first person and we are constantly inside his head. The mystery was interesting and I liked how he went about solving it, but I am not sure I can take another book from Theo's perspective. ( )

Wow, what a gripping detective story.

This is the kind of horrifying story that leaves me anxiously looking around our house late at night wondering whether something like that is near here, too.

I really liked the protagonist of the story--the scientist, who isn't satisfied with easy answers, and who knows that so many coincidences just can't be right. The detective's shtick in this story is that he understands statistics. That might sound dry, but with Mayne's writing, it isn't. I thought it really worked rather well.

And then, as the clues start to mount up, you realize how horrifyingly awful this really is. Yikes. This was gripping. But I really shouldn't have read it late at night, 'cause it is the kind of thing that cost me a bit of sleep after I was done reading it. ( )

Good story. The writing style is hard to get used to - semi-stream-of-consciousness. ( )
