Not a bad biography, but biographies really aren’t my thing. I totally love her first few albums, and like some of her later stuff. Certainly learned a lot about JM’s life, but I’m not sure it makes me like her music any more than I did in the first place. She’s had a tough life and as she went on she seemed to become a lot less likable, although that’s understandable. I’m not sure what point there was into prying into her life, although it was interesting to know who “Free Man in Paris” was written about... ( )

Decent primer for anyone who likes Joni. There's too much critiquing of the songs and albums, mainly from Blue to Hejira. Still a pretty good book. ( )

I read the book: Joni Mitchell - In Her Own Words a few years ago. It consisted of interviews between Joni and a friend which took place over her long career. It was Joni talking about her music, her writing and her painting. It was a very good book. This book was very different, though just as good. It's a more standard biography, telling us about Joni's life, though centering her relationships and events around the different albums she's made over her life. It gives much much more background about other people and events than the "In Her Own Words" book does. In order to get a well rounded picture of Joni's life, i recommend reading both books. ( )

thorough and objective look at Joni Mitchell's life and music, written with respect for her genius, and honesty about her personal demons. ( )

You really must be a Joni Mitchell fan if you start, and finish, this book. Well written, but dull in places because of the sheer volume of information.

A Poet, able to play and sing her own songs, Joni has long been my favorite singer of the folk era. She transcended this era by dabbling in jazz and cutting a cd with Mingus. Some fans liked her earthy poems rather that her jazz compilations.

Overall, she is definitely a supremely talented woman to be very much admired. ( )

Joni Mitchell’s gift was so enormous that it remade the social space around her. As David Yaffe’s new biography... suggests, it is no small burden to possess something as valuable as Mitchell’s talent.... At times, his book feels as if its main objective were for him to never again be rebuffed by the “strong, resilient, defiant” woman he admires, who looked “more beautiful than she did in the ads for Yves St. Laurent that were in all the magazines.” Add Mitchell’s biographer to the list of men she played like a paddleball.
