"Called a "magnificently crafted story ... brimming with wisdom" by Howard Frank Mosher in The Washington Post Book World, Crossing to Safety has, since its publication in 1987, established itself as one of the greatest and most cherished American novels of the twentieth century. Tracing the lives, loves, and aspirations of two couples who move between Vermont and Wisconsin, it is a work of quiet majesty, deep compassion, and powerful insight into the alchemy of friendship and marriage."--Jacket.… (mere)

What a wonderful story of two couples and their marriages, their friendships, their ups and downs and how they supported one another through it all. Thanks to @annebogel for the recommendation. Can't wait to read Wallace Stegner's other books. ( )

I really wanted to like this book, but gave up after 40 pages or so. I just did not like the voice, nor the constant literary inferences. ( )

Wow, I had never even heard of Wallace Stegner and how amazing for me to learn of a writer of this stature and now have all of his books to look forward to. The prose was magnificent and the book exudes a love of the natural world. I loved all of the characters and their very human flaws. Thanks to @annebogel #wsirn and @tarajoy90 for the suggestion. ( )

This is my fourth read of Mr. Stegner and again, I marvel at his mastery of character and the way that he presents fascinating, subtle nuances of just being human, in a relationship and friendships. This is a measured telling of the growth, changes and discoveries made by two couples about themselves and the other couple over their lifetimes. Stegner’s writing is unsurpassed in its exquisite detail and feeling. ( )

This is a powerful character study with beautiful writing. It is candid in its assessment of both marriage and friendship. ( )

I could give all to Time except-except

What I myself have held. But why declare

The things forbidden that while the Customs slept

I have crossed to Safety with? For I am There

And what I would not part with I have kept.
