This volume contains two short story collections, with most of the stories touching on the subject of love and other undesirable mental conditions. There are no fantastical stories in the first collection; everything takes place firmly in the real world (if you can call Hollywood the real world.) The second collection holds all the science fiction, fantasy and horror. Overall I thought the book was okay, but there were only a handful of stories I thought were exceptional.

"The Resurgence of Miss Ankle-Strap Wedgie": A pair of studio execs attempt to revive the career of a once-famous movie star.

"Shattered Like a Glass Goblin": A young man tries to rescue his intended fiancee from a drug house that is gradually transforming into something unspeakable. Disturbing story that I remembered well from reading it in Deathbird Stories decades ago.

"G.B.K.--a Many-Flavored Bird": A sad story about an eccentric SF fan who has created his own reality. I think all of us in fandom have met someone like this at one point.

"A Boy and His Dog": A post-apocalyptic tale about true love.

This would be the final volume in the Edgeworks series after Ellison got fed up with White Wolf's shoddy production. (In a previous volume they misprinted the date of his mother's death, which I'm sure infuriated him to no end. In this one, the spelling of "Kyben" keeps changing throughout "Run for the Stars.") There were supposed to be twenty volumes so this is a tragic loss and surely one of the greatest blunders in the history of publishing. ( )
