"Olivia Brownlow is no damsel in distress. Born in a workhouse and raised as a boy among thieving London street gangs, she is as tough and cunning as they come. When she is taken in by her uncle after a caper gone wrong, her life goes from fighting and stealing on the streets to lavish dinners and soirees as a debutante in high society. But she can't seem to escape her past ... or forget the teeming slums where children just like her still scrabble to survive. Jack MacCarron rose from his place in London's East End to become the adopted "nephew" of a society matron. Little does society know that MacCarron is a false name for a boy once known among London gangs as the Artful Dodger, and that he and his "aunt" are robbing them blind every chance they get. When Jack encounters Olivia Brownlow in places he least expects, his curiosity is piqued. Why is a society girl helping a bunch of homeless orphan thieves? Even more intriguing, why does she remind him so much of someone he once knew? Jack finds himself wondering if going legit and risking it all might be worth it for love."--Jacket flap.… (mere)

Great fun!

What can I say? This book is great. I think even if you’re completely unfamiliar with the story of Oliver Twist (book, movie, or musical) you can enjoy this story, although obviously it doesn’t hurt to have some background knowledge. The author does a great job giving enough personality that everyone feels like a distinct character even if they only speak for a few lines. Olivia’s internal struggles of trying to be a proper lady while helping out the orphans as well as sometimes being so panicked she can’t think straight felt believable. Maybe the solution to one of the problems at the end felt a bit too easy, but I think any other solution would’ve felt super cheesy. I guess I’d give this a 4.5 star rating, so rounded up - 5!
Just a note to potential readers, this book draws more from the musical Oliver! than from the book Oliver Twist, although it includes book character Monks. If you’re familiar with the musical, you can spot a few pieces of dialogue that appear to be referencing song lyrics, which I thought was cute. ( )

The reader was superb which may explain the 4 stars. Interesting, sweet reimagining of Oliver Twist as a girl with romance. ( )

Olivia Brownlow, born in a workhouse and raised as a boy among thieving London street gangs, is as tough and cunning as they come. Taken in by her uncle after a caper gone wrong, she's now a debutante in high society. But she can't forget the teeming slums where children still scrabble to survive. Jack MacCarron, once known as the Artful Dodger, became the adopted "nephew" of a society matron. He and his "aunt" are robbing society blind every chance they get. When Jack encounters Olivia, he wonders why a society girl is helping a bunch of homeless orphan thieves--and why does she remind him so much of someone he once knew?

This book was such a fun read! A new "twist" on Dicken's Oliver Twist with a bit of victorian romance thrown into the plot. ( )

I wasn't sure how I would feel about this book. Some tales are classic such as Oliver Twist and I do love Oliver! But this book works if you are willing to accept that young Oliver was really a girl masquerading as a boy. I can accept that as the life of a young girl on the streets of London was likely to be more the story of Nancy.

Then add in Jack MacCarron, once known as the Artful Dodger and there is a story to be told. With those two twists in the plot, it elevates what is a fairly clean Victorian romance to a good story. The plight of orphans on the street is still addressed.

Warning: If you are looking for an ultra-clean "Blink" book, this may not suit. There are some strong words, but nothing that would have been bleeped on TV from the 1970s. Olivia must make some hard choices regarding her life, but realizing one has made a mistake and trying to fix it in order to be true to oneself is not a bad message in my mind. I wouldn't hesitate to share it with a reader in high school.

Recommended for those who like historical fiction or clean Victorian romances. ( )
