Our unnamed protagonist spends the morning watching the sunrise along the beach with his father. What readers do know is that our main character is deaf/ hard-of-hearing. The protagonist communicates with his dad by lip-reading, signing, and speaking. I liked that all three were incorporated since not all d/Deaf people sign, and not all d/Deaf people read lips. ( )

This is a story describing a caring relationship between and father and his son. It begins by the little boy putting on his hearing aids early in the morning which lets the reader know that he has some trouble hearing. He quietly wakes his dad up and they sneak out of the house since he is very excited to see his first sunrise. They go down to the beach and make sure they are the only two there. They use a great mixture of sign language and lip reading to communicate between each other. The author makes sure to include vivid descriptions of the boys excitement and how they are enjoying their time together. ( )

In this sweet snapshot of a father and son sneaking out of the house early in the morning to show the son his first sunrise, we get to see how a boy who is deaf communicates with his father. They use sign language, lip reading and even have a secret hand squeeze, highlighting for readers that language, communications and signals are capable in many modalities. The author even makes sure that the reader speaks aloud, to show the complete spectrum of ability. Adaptive equipment and strategies are mentioned, but they are just details in one boy's life. By keeping the focus on the special relationship and time shared between a father and son, the author cleverly paints a picture of a typical little boy who just happens to be deaf. ( )

I enjoyed this book because it shows how the young boy and his father communicate. It shows that deaf people are not dumb and there is more than one way to communicate with sign language, reading lips, and squeezing each other's hand. K-3 It would be a great idea to give young kids this message, it broadens there knowledge of communication and how to not treat others differently although they have a disability. ( )

Dad and Me in the Morning is about a little boy's trip to watch the sun rise at the beach with his dad. The little boy is hearing impaired, wears a hearing aid and signs his speech. His dad is very patient with him, and they even have a secret hand squeeze amongst them to communicate special moments. Having a child who is hearing impaired is not easy on a family who hears. The boy in the story really cherishes the time his father takes to bond with him over a sunrise. I think it was a very important image to see the dynamic of the father and son so peaceful and understanding. The little boy has a disability but the way he operates his morning and seemingly daily life, it does not hinder his adventure, his love or his zest for life. The dad plays a pivotal part in his son's confidence. ( )
