A little girl and her older brother are on their way to the market. The little girl tells her brother that she knows how to get to the market all by herself and doesn't need him to show her how to get there because she made a song up of the directions of how to get there. The young girl and her brother pass variety of places and hear the sounds that each place makes and she remembered the sounds and put them into the chronological order in order for them to get to the market. Once they get to the market she sings the order of how they arrived to the market backwards and they end up home. When they get home, their parents had a surprise party for the little girl. The little girl knows how to get around her city. The illustration in this book that shows how the author sees how the little girl sees the places and what each place has a specific sound is remarkable. Books can help spark a memory that a reader has by just a sound or sight that they see. ( )

A brother and a sister go to Martha's market for the birthday supplies. She says that hse can go there by herself. She takes adventure from their home to the city. She sang a song while she walks. There were many sounds, sights, smells, and shapes of her neighborhood that she had seen and remembered on the way to the market.

This book is a playful romp through the city with a young girl and her brother. The two are seeing the sights and rhyming themselves a map so as not to get lost. The illustrations are simple but effective and bring the page to life. All the sights sounds and excitement of the city is portrayed through vivid imagery and inventive rhymes.
