His publishers are threatening to deduct money from his royalties for their loss. They tell him he must write a Christmas story with less than two months before Christmas. He has lost his muse. At home, his wife is having baby number six. She is obsessed with their Christmas party. His children are obsessed with what they want for Christmas. Charles has lost his way and his good cheer for Christmas. He is fighting with everyone. He does not want to write a Christmas story but needs the money. Can he find his muse? Can he find the spirit of Christmas? I loved this story. I felt like I was in Dickens' London. I love the nods to his other works, words, and characters. The characters of Dickens, his family, his friends, and his rivals were wonderful. I felt like I knew them and loved or hated them. I liked how he had to go back to the beginning to find his story. I enjoyed his interactions with Eleanor who points out what he feels, what he's missing, and what he needs. She is so spot on. This book resonated with me. I will tell you to keep the tissue handy. You will need it. These people were so real to me. I hated leaving them. This is a keeper. Maybe not one I can read every Christmas season but one that needs a re-read and someone else to discuss it with each reading. There is so much there. So much wisdom, so much delight. I’m surprised this book isn’t rated higher! I got absolutely consumed by the imagery and nuances of Victorian London and the characters contained within. I know this was a work of fiction but I loved the flawed man that Dickens was portrayed as. Who doesn’t struggle with all of those emotions sometimes? A Christmas Carol is one of my favorite works of fiction and I read it every Christmas along with the original Christmas story. It is said that it was written out of financial imperative, but whatever necessitated its writing, it is obvious that Dickens knew what Christmas ought to mean and brought that feeling to life in his fine tale. Which brings us to this lovely little debut novel by Samantha Silva. Silva caught the spirit of The Christmas Carol and put the same vivacity into her own imaginings. A thirty-one year old Charles Dickens, already a father of six, having enjoyed a kind of celebrity that few could boast of in his day, finds himself with a flop in Martin Chuzzlewit and is pressed by his publishers to write a Christmas story or suffer a loss of income. Already financially over-extended, Dickens has little choice but to comply, but can a writer produce a good book because it is demanded of him? Of course not, so Dickens needs some inspiration, which Silva supplies in spades. I hope to see many more novels by this extremely talented writer. She brings the foggy streets of London to life; I could feel the wisps of mist tugging at Dickens as he roams its backroads and famous thoroughfares. She sets a mood, much as the man she pays tribute to does, and I think he might be willing to tip his hat to her efforts. “There is nothing in the world so irresistibly contagious as laughter and good humour.” And a good book ... and this is a pretty good one. ingen anmeldelser | tilføj en anmeldelse
Laced with humor, rich historical detail from Charles Dickens' life, and clever winks to his work, Samantha Silva's Mr. Dickens and His Carol is an irresistible new take on a cherished classic. Charles Dickens is not feeling the Christmas spirit. His newest book is an utter flop, the critics have turned against him, and relatives near and far hound him for money. While his wife plans a lavish holiday party for their ever-expanding family and circle of friends, Dickens has visions of the poor house. But when his publishers try to blackmail him into writing a Christmas book to save them all from financial ruin, he refuses. And a serious bout of writer's block sets in. Frazzled and filled with self-doubt, Dickens seeks solace in his great palace of thinking, the city of London itself. On one of his long night walks, in a once-beloved square, he meets the mysterious Eleanor Lovejoy, who might be just the muse he needs. As Dickens' deadlines close in, Eleanor propels him on a Scrooge-like journey that tests everything he believes about generosity, friendship, ambition, and love. The story he writes will change Christmas forever. Full of holiday cheer and Victorian whimsy, Mr. Dickens and His Carol is the perfect audiobook to instill listeners with the Christmas spirit. Praise for Mr. Dickens and His Carol: "From his first words to his last, Euan Morton's narration is quintessentially Dickensian. This novel gives Morton the opportunity to voice all the personalities of the original CHRISTMAS CAROL - from revelers to Scrooge, ghosts, and Tiny Tim - and all are satisfying portrayals." - AudioFile Magazine"A charming, comic, and ultimately poignant story about the creation of the most famous Christmas tale ever written. It's as foggy and haunted and redemptive as the original; it's all heart, and I read it in a couple of ebullient, Christmassy gulps." -Anthony Doerr, #1 New York Times bestselling author of All The Light We Cannot See"[Silva] tunes herself to Dickens's imaginative frequency? She inhabits Dickens's sensitivity to London's atmosphere, its chancellors and urchins, its cobblestones and fog." -The New York Times Book Revi No library descriptions found. |

Nel romanzo troviamo un Dickens infelice e preoccupato, insofferente nel clima festoso natalizio: l'ultimo libro, The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit, non sta vendendo bene. E' quasi un fallimento
Intorno a lui fervono i preparativi di pranzi, addobbi e regali con un dispendio di denaro preoccupante.
I preparativi a Devonshire Terrace fervono,
