Sixteen-year-old Aza never intended to pursue the mystery of fugitive billionaire Russell Pickett, but there's a hundred thousand dollar reward at stake and her Best and Most Fearless Friend, Daisy, is eager to investigate. So together, they navigate the short distance and broad divides that separate them from Russell Pickett's son, Davis. Aza is trying. John Green books, man. Maybe this one wasn't as heartbreaking as TFIOS, but it was excellent. Which you can tell because I read it in about the span of a day... ( )

I know many of us have our criticisms of John Green, but this was possibly the best depiction of how anxiety feels I've ever read in a book. ( )

All of John Green's books will forever have a special place in my heart and I do not think I could ever really pick a favorite. I love his writing style as it makes the characters and the situations they are living in feel so very real. His characters are perfectly imperfect and I feel like I can relate to them all. If John Green writes a book I am guaranteed to read it. ( )

I read this book in 2018 and it is now 2020. I couldn't remember what exactly this book was about or if I even liked it or not, so I pulled up my review and discovered I never added my review. Luckily, I had discussed the book via email with my bookish BFF, so I am copying and pasting what I wrote to her about it, with some minor edits and updates. There may or may not be spoilers, depending on what you consider spoilers, so, be warned.
-------------------------
Turtles All The Way Down by John Green, author of Looking For Alaska, which I read and enjoyed and cried my eyes out over the series; The Fault In Our Stars, which I think I’ve only seen the movie and have not read the book yet; An Abundance of Katherines, which I’d never even heard of until now, and Paper Towns, which I haven’t read yet and the movie was just ok for me.

Turtles is about two friends, Daisy and Aza, who learn the billionaire father of one of their classmates, Davis, is missing and there is a reward for finding him. Daisy wants that reward!!!!

Some reviewers found the plot line about trying to find the missing dad far fetched. People, please. Of course it’s far fetched. So is every Nancy Drew mystery or any other story where kids are out solving crimes, murders and mysteries. It’s a story! Get over it. Just focus on the characters FFS!!!

And don’t worry, that is not the main focus of the book and the author gets that out of the way quickly and moves on with what the book is really about: Friendships, and growing up and figuring things out. And mental illness.

Turtles “is a wrenching and revelatory novel that provides a window into what it’s like to live in constant fear of your own mind.”

Our girl Aza struggles with anxiety and OCD. I don’t have OCD but I can definitely relate to her anxiety and spiraling thoughts. The difference is that for me it’s random, for Aza it’s extreme, constant, and life consuming.

I learned that the author, John Green, has OCD and there is a New York Times article on him that was highly recommended by others and now by me. Unfortunately, the NYT has that annoying paywall and they found out about the secret way we were all getting around the paywall and tightened their lax security so, you may or may not be able to read the article via this link. At the time I first realized I might be fictional, my weekdays were spent at a publicly funded institution on the north side of Indianapolis called White River High School, where I was required to eat lunch at a particular time -- between 12:37 P.M. and 1:14 P.M. -- by forces so much large than myself that I couldn't even begin to identify them.

I thought about him asking me if I'd ever been in love. It's  a weird phrase in English, in love, like it's a sea you drown in or a town you live in. You don't get to be in anything else---in friendship or in anger or in hope. All you can be in is love.
Anybody can look at you. It’s quite rare to find someone who sees the same world you see.
