This is an entertaining and enlightening account of a dream, and how hard work and good timing can make that dream come true. The author and his family ditch their urban life and start a human-powered organic farm in the country near Toronto. After a few years of hard work they succeed in becoming a farm that supplies elite chefs and other foodie clients. But they also find ways to give back, becoming an integral part of a system that provides good quality food to low income people. It truly is a dream story. It is also a manifesto. The last chapter and the epilogue are written almost as a challenge, asking the reader if I am part of the problem or part of the solution. Probably I am some of both, since I still eat meat, I can’t always afford to buy organic produce from local farmers. But I do cook my own food at home most of the time, which I guess is actually less common than it should be. I do think about food and the relationship humans have with it, and the relationship we both have with the planet. I suppose that’s the first step. ( ) I found The New Farm to be a fascinating read. I try to make good food choices and this book inspires me to try and do better. Not everyone can be an organic farmer and I admire Brent and Gillian for all their hard work and success. Even more admirable is their fundraising and commitment to getting good food for those in need. These are people who are making a difference. ingen anmeldelser | tilføj en anmeldelse
"After years of working at the ends of the earth in human rights and development, Brent Preston and his wife were die-hard city dwellers. But when their second child arrived, the shine came off urban living. In 2003 they bought a hundred acres and a rundown farmhouse and set out to build a real farm, one that would sustain their family, nourish their community, heal their environment, and turn a profit. The New Farm is Preston's memoir of a decade of grinding toil and perseverance. Farming is a complex and precarious business, and they made plenty of mistakes along the way. But as they learned how to grow food, and to succeed at the business of farming, they also found that a small, sustainable, organic farm could be an engine for change, a path to a more just and sustainable food system. Today, The New Farm supplies top restaurants, supports community food banks, hosts events with leading chefs, and grows extraordinary produce. Told with humor and heart, The New Farm is a joy, a passionate book by an important new voice." -- No library descriptions found. |
