A light and largely entertaining read. I skipped some of the letters in the second half of the collection; not that there's anything wrong with them, but simply that things become a bit repetitive after a couple of hundred pages. I would imagine this might not be a problem for fans of Mérimée or of collections of letters in general, neither of which am I. On the whole a charming record of a thirty year friendship / chaste (?) love affair, teasing and playful and sometimes funny. ( )
