I received an advanced reader’s copy of Sad Girls, and I absolutely loved it. While it deals with emotionally charged issues that we all face growing up, Sad Girls has a darker side that compels you to keep reading. Through the protagonist, Audrey, we face the typical growing pains of experiencing love for the first time and coping with mistakes that have all-too-real consequences as well as the darker, deeper pains of anxiety, the agony of keeping secrets, and the unintended consequences of lies that go too far. In the words of Lang Leav, “Your first love isn’t the first person you give your heart to; it’s the first one who breaks it.” You will fall in love with Sad Girls, and it will break your heart in the most beautiful and poignant ways, but you won’t be able to put it down ( )

I'm binge-reading Lang Leav’s works and I decided to start on with her only novel, Sad Girls. This debut novel is about young ladies facing consequences of the bad decisions they made in the past.

This novel has its own share of good and bad qualities. I’m amazed by the start of the story, actually. It kind of promises a great storyline for the rest of the novel. It is very interesting how Leav introduces her characters. Although her characters are diverse and unique in their own different ways, I cannot quite find my way to connect with them. The main protagonist, Audrey, is very faulty and weak as a person to me. I don’t know why but I can’t be able to push myself in liking and understanding her character. I may be called harsh for saying this, but I just want to warn the future readers that the characters are kind of irritating and high maintenance at times. Also, the story focuses on Audrey and her life alone when in fact the other girls have a story as well. I was left asking for what happened to them because as much as I am interested in the main character, I am very involved with others as well. I just have high hopes for a lot of the characters that I expected too much from them & wanting to learn more of their stories.

In terms of the narrative, I think the novel has a great plot but only it has not been capitalize from the middle until the end. I adore the story’s sequence but the way it lacked deeper explanation on the most important part of the story just caught me asking for more. I think the readers, especially her avid readers, deserve that. I mean, we all do. If only she capitalizes the beauty of her plot and turn it to make her story more interesting then maybe Sad Girls can be one those exceptional contemporary young adult novels of the generation.

Sad Girls is okay. The way it is written is okay but there is something I just can’t quite figure out why I did not connect on the story. I’m a lover of young adult novels, and the setting and characters are my kind of characters and setting, but it just did not click with me. I don’t know if it just me, but I have this feeling that Lang Leav did everything on purpose. Maybe she has a plan on making a sequel of this since almost half of the events in the story are left unexplained and unanswered. It almost looks like the ending has been forced just for the sake of ending it without considering its characters. I just read the novel for a day and I am overwhelmed by many questions I had in the end. Even though I like my reads to left me with a lot of contemplating to do, I don’t want it to have a lot of loopholes that mostly the characters are not given enough justification.

It’s an easy read. I just expected more from her so I ended up looking for a deeper storyline. So if you are looking for a light read, Sad Girls can be a go-to one. ( )

I've seen that this book isn't exactly one of the most loved books and it got plenty of hate but honestly, I really think it was nice. Dark, but nice.
I'm not really a huge fan of her prose writing and even in the novel it's pretty clear her business is poetry but I don't really care about that. The plot was different and sincerely I was in the mood for something kinda darker, my mood hasn't been so great lately so I wasn't really up for cheesy young adult love and this one hit the spot.
I love Lang! ( )

So this book wasn’t quite what I was expecting. It wasn’t that bad but it just wasn’t as good as I expected it to be. I had these high expectations going in and it didn’t live up to it. It had a lot of potential to be something amazing but it fell flat.

In a way it reminded me aesthetically of Lana Del Rey’s music. Since I like Lana Del Rey, I did appreciate that aspect of this book. ( )
