This was an informative book for children about how other children without sight are still able to read books. I wish it would have had actual braille in the book as an example to make it a real experience for all children. However, the book was able to explain the process well. It portrayed the character's blindness as an asset because he could read in the dark! ( )

The book "The Secret Code" is about how one blind students shows other in his class how to read in Braille. I liked the book, it was very simply which is fine as long as the reading level of the student matches. i liked the illustrations, i thought the illustrator did an excellent job of depicting the difference between a braille book as compared to a written one. The overall language was also very good for the age group this book is targeted at. There is new vocabulary in this book, words such as blind and braille are most likely new to young readers. Therefore having the rest of the book easy to understand is beneficial. The overall message of this book is that people may do things differently then others, but we are all still the same.

I like that this book is almost matter-of-fact. It's just another early reader - not a 'special' book about a 'special' child. It would have been fun to have the Braille alphabet in raised dots, but as the note on the copyright page says, most libraries will have a resource so children can 'feel' the language. I do have one question if any of you know - why did Oscar's book have pictures? ( )
