The President Is Missing af Bill Clinton (2018)

  1. 02
The Untold History of the United States af Oliver Stone (PlaidStallion)
PlaidStallion: Give him a break, he is left handed.

Experts would debate the precise number of Iraqi children who died as a result of the sanctions. In December 1995, two UN-affiliated researchers, writing in the British medical journal The Lancet, placed the number at 567,000 but later lowered that estimate. In 2003, British Prime Minister Tony Blair, speaking at a joint press conference with George Bush, said, “Over the past five years, 400,000 Iraqi children under the age of five died of malnutrition and disease,” using that as an excuse to justify an invasion that would add tens of thousands more to that total.

Though Clinton resisted the pressure to invade, he and his secretary of state laid the rhetorical groundwork for Bush and Cheney. Albright warned, “Iraq is a long way from [the United States], but what happens there matters a great deal here. For the risks that the leaders of a rogue state will use nuclear, chemical or biological weapons against us or our allies is the greatest security threat we face.” On another occasion, Albright had the audacity to declare, “If we have to use force, it is because we are America; we are the indispensable nation. We stand tall and we see further than other countries into the future.”

I could not put this book down. Scary how this could potentially come true. Well written and fast-paced. ( )

Not bad, I listened to the audio book which was read by Dennis Quaid so that was enjoyable. But it was a good story and I enjoyed it ( )

I haven't read a James Patterson book for a while, but thought I'd pick this one up just out of curiosity since it was a collaboration with former President Bill Clinton. As the title implies, this book deals with being President, but also involves a cyber attack against the United States by Middle Eastern terrorists, Russian meddling into our affairs, and gets into Washington politics, and the sad state of a politically divided Congress.

I suspect that Patterson came up with the crime & terrorism plot, and Clinton added details of how the White House might function during a national emergency and how the Secret Service protects the President. I suspect that Clinton also snuck in a concluding political message cleverly disguised as a Presidential address to Congress. In the book, the fictional President addresses a joint session of Congress after the fight against the terrorists, and in his speech talks about the need to put partisan politics aside, toning down the extreme rhetoric of certain media outlets, working on issues such as establishing policies which strengthen the middle class, ensuring fair elections without outside meddling, a need for education and creating good jobs, having civil discussions about climate change, etc. I'd guess that at this point in time, it's easier for former President Clinton to get that message out by incorporating his suggestions into a James Patterson novel rather than trying to get the Nation's attention by giving a speech on national TV.
