"One teenager in a skirt. One teenager with a lighter. One moment that changes both of their lives forever. If it weren't for the 57 bus, Sasha and Richard never would have met. Both were high school students from Oakland, California, one of the most diverse cities in the country, but they inhabited different worlds. Sasha, a white teen, lived in the middle-class foothills and attended a small private school. Richard, a black teen, lived in the crime-plagued flatlands and attended a large public one. Each day, their paths overlapped for a mere eight minutes. But one afternoon on the bus ride home from school, a single reckless act left Sasha severely burned, and Richard charged with two hate crimes and facing life imprisonment. The case garnered international attention, thrusting both teenagers into the spotlight."--… (mere)

This story revolves around two teenagers that live completely different lives, but cross paths for a couple of minutes a day. One is an agender young white girl, the other is an African American male. One day on their joined bus ride, the boy lights the girls skirt on fire as a prank. However, the skirt bursts up in flames and leaves the young girl with third degree burns. The court case becomes popular around the world, and the young boy is sent to prison based on an adult trial even though he was just a teen. This book explores race, class, and justice.

This is the nonfiction story of two teenagers in Oakland, CA that lived very different lives but found their paths crossing on the 57 bus. Richard, a black teenager from East Oakland, sets Sasha, a nonbinary white teenager, on fire. The author looks at the stories of both of the teenagers and how that incident changes both their lives. The author does a good job of not excusing Richard's actions while raising social justice questions about how black juveniles are treated in our criminal justice system. This would be an excellent book to read for a book club because it raises a lot of questions for discussion. I especially like that, although this is written for a young adult audience, the author includes a lot of nuance that is sometimes missing in books marketed to teens. I definitely recommend the book and I hope that my 15-year old daughter will add it to her TBR. ( )

The true story of a black teenager who set a non-binary person's skirt on fire. The author is a journalist and there is definitely a news story feel to it. What I thought was fantastic though was how the author was able to provide the reader with both sides of the story in a very genuine way and I empathized with the perpetrator as much as the victim. The book also takes a look at brain development, how California laws have changed over the last 40 years (often not for the better), the effect of trauma on future actions, and how the judicial system is much more about punishment than rehabilitation, especially if juveniles are sent to adult prison. Not only is this book informational, but it is also a very interesting read with perspectives from both sides of the story. It helped me understand a lot more about the pronoun “they” and why people don’t always feel they fit into one of the two known genders. It also brought to my attention the issue of underage kids getting prosecuted and why a lot of them deserve a second chance. It’s very interesting and definitely a page turner, especially because all of the chapters are very short. You should definitely read this! ( )

RGG: Brilliant. Illuminating. Only hesitation is it's nonfiction, but feels fictional. The nonfiction aspect is critical to the weighty importance of this book. Reading Interest: 14-YA.
