For a senior undergraduate or first year graduate-level course in Introduction to Topology. Appropriate for a one-semester course on both general and algebraic topology or separate courses treating each topic separately. This title is part of the Pearson Modern Classics series. Pearson Modern Classics are acclaimed titles at a value price. Please visit www.pearsonhighered.com/math-classics-series for a complete list of titles. This text is designed to provide instructors with a convenient single text resource for bridging between general and algebraic topology courses. Two separate, distinct sections (one on general, point set topology, the other on algebraic topology) are each suitable for a one-semester course and are based around the same set of basic, core topics. Optional, independent topics and applications can be studied and developed in depth depending on course needs and preferences.… (mere)

This is one of those obtuse books where even when you already know everything it is going to say, the presentation is turgid and confusing. The writing is tedious and fails to communicate the interest of topology either from an analytic or a set-theoretic point of view. You could read this whole book three times and still not know why topology was interesting or what it was used for.

Also, the binding is cheap and falls apart easily.

Recommended alternative: General Topology, by Kelley. ( )

Topology is an exceptional book, and, though I have some doubts as to its current suitability as an undergraduate text at an average institution, it certainly is a book that should be owned by anybody who teaches such a course or who has an interest in the material. It is a genuine classic.
