"When the entire village is invited to a garden party for a mysterious 'special announcement', nobody expected that party to end with a man being thrown to his death from a window. The murder is committed at Julia South's estranged father's manor, so all eyes in Peridale turn to her to solve the case. In a race against the clock, Julia must juggle her blossoming romance with Detective Inspector Brown, and her young lodger, Jessie's, sudden strange behaviour, to uncover the truth behind the man's untimely death. I'm voluntarily reviewing a free advance reader copy I received from the author.

Another great installment by Agatha Frost!

Peridale once again gets struck by murder. Julia is still having Jessie live with her, she hasn't signed her divorce papers, and she hasn't agreed to a date with DI Barker yet. Not much has changed in the last month or so. Of course that all changes with a murder at her father's house. I loved how Julia still couldn't help get her nose in the middle of everything, and how Barker just accepts that of her. They are actually quite cute together. The mystery was interesting. I figured out some of the who-dun-it, but definitely did not get it all right, so there was some surprise. I enjoyed seeing the family issues get worked on, and loved seeing Julia grow as a person as her and Jessie build a strong, tremendous bond.

I am very much looking forward to more Peridale stories! ( )

Lemonade and Lies: A Peridale Cafe Mystery
Author: Agatha Frost
Publisher: Independently Published

Julia South has been hanging on to her divorce papers for a long time, why, she has no idea. But what she does know is that she never expected to be in the middle of a murder investigation, again. Then she discovers a body, one she recognizes and simply can't stop herself from getting involved. Detective Inspector Brown is new, egotistical and completely underestimates Julia’s detecting skills. Maybe because of the Detective or in spite of him, Julia decides she has to find the murderer before someone she knows or loves is accused and arrested.

When Julia realizes that her father might be at the center of the murder she keeps her cool. She remains calm and logical, determined to find the truth no matter the cost. He isn’t the man she grew up knowing but he is still her father. Even though Julia does not like the victim, she admits that she didn’t know him well and may be biased in many regards. That won't stop her though.

This is the second book in the Peridale Cafe Mystery series. It can be read as a standalone mystery with little need to delve into the previous book. Agatha Frost has written an enormously entertaining story with all the elements required to keep the reader turning the page. It is a fast paced story with grounded well thought out characters. The setting is a small village with everything that comes with it. Gossip, rivalries, and family, The unveiling of the killer, is exciting as well as plausible and is revealed in a methodical fashion with no questions remaining as to the murderer's guilt. This book and the series is highly recommended.
