I'm voluntarily reviewing a free advance reader copy I received from the author.

Julia owns a bakery in her hometown. The town is a very small English village with tons of gossip. Everyone is into everyone else's business. Julia comes across a murder in the town, and she finds herself unable to stop doing her own investigating. There is a hint of romance building through the story, but it is not a central theme. I liked seeing Julia as a strong, independent, self-sufficient woman.

This was a great debut for Agatha Frost. The writing was smooth, and added some clues along the way for me to help try to figure it out, but kept enough slightly hidden so Julia could solve it herself. I wasn't too fond of Detective Inspector Brown at the beginning, but he warmed to me, much like he did with Julia. I ended up finding him a bit endearing as the book wore on.

I am very much looking forward to the next book so I can see more of Julia and DI Brown. I am also happy to see more about Julia and Jessie. The ending was awesome. :-)
