Laurie Gelman's clever debut novel about a year in the life of a kindergarten class momâ??a brilliant send-up of the petty and surprisingly cutthroat terrain of parent politics.
Jen Dixon is not your typical Kansas City kindergarten class momâ??or mom in general. Jen already has two college-age daughters by two different (probably) musicians, and it's her second time around the class mom block with five-year-old Maxâ??this time with a husband and father by her side. Though her best friend and PTA President sees her as the "wisest" candidate for the job (or oldest), not all of the other parents agree.
From recording parents' response times to her emails about helping in the classroom, to requesting contributions of "special" brownies for curriculum night, not all of Jen's methods win approval from the other moms. Throw in an old flame from Jen's past, a hyper-sensitive "allergy mom," a surprisingly sexy kindergarten teacher, and an impossible-to-please Real Housewife-wannabe, causing problems at every turn, and the job really becomes much more than she signed up for.
Relatable, irreverent, and hilarious in the spirit of Maria Semple, Class Mom is a fresh, welcome voice in fictionâ??the kind of novel that real moms clamor for, and a vicarious thrill-read for all mothers, who will be laughing as they are liberated by Gelman's acerbic

Completely fun brain candy. This is a about a formerly cool rock star groupie who is now a middle aged housewife and snarky class mom for her son's kindergarten class.

A little midlife crisis, a old crush renewed, and interactions with the weirdo Moms of the class add up to a fun way to pass the day. Read this one in two sittings over the Thanksgiving weekend.

I thought it was great for the kind of book it is. ( )

I listened to the audiobook, which may have dampened the humor for me. I didn't find this very funny. Mostly I was disappointed that the main character was clearly supposed to be a likable kind of in-your-face honest, but for me was mostly just insensitive and self-absorbed. She sort of rolls her eyes at anyone who doesn't appreciate her attempts at humor and I think the reader is meant to roll their eyes along with her. But I was not amused at her comments about the lesbian moms, an Asian mom, a mom of a kid with severe allergies, etc. I kept thinking, what year was this written? (2017 which means there's no excuse.) She is sometimes called out for being a jerk and is only mildly apologetic.

One specific thing that bothered me is that Jen aggressively demands all parents provide various items for class gatherings. It doesn't even cross her mind that some families might not be comfortably middle class. Maybe there's no economic diversity in her Kansas City neighborhood. Maybe she'd be cool about it if a family was having a hard time. But it was jarring for me.

The plot centers around Jen training for a mud run and various minor mysteries about her fellow moms and her kid's teacher. She has some marital trouble when her high school crush appears as the father of one of her son's classmates.

Does this book have redeeming qualities? As a mom with a kid in kindergarten, it's interesting to compare experiences. Mine is nothing like Jen's, for which I'm grateful. ( )

For parents and non-parents alike, this was a super fun book with a lot of humour that I loved reading.

Our main character, Jen, was absolutely hilarious, and while I can see why other parents were not terribly entertained by her emails, I thought they were an absolute riot. It was so sweet to see her interacting with her daughters in college next to her son starting kindergarten, and I loved her general optimism.

It seems that kindergarten moms are basically their own world of cliques and catfights, which made for a lot of drama and intrigue as they tried to appear responsible in front of the kids. I really got to know each of the fifteen or so parents in the class and was really interested in the ways that they would change throughout the book.

I loved her flirting and her ultimate realization about what it is to be a women getting older. The ultimate scenario was absolutely hilarious and I read it laughing while hiding my face in my hands. A mystery thrown in was rather strange, but easy to read and kept a little interest.

This was a lovely happy-go-luck book that I immensely enjoyed reading and recommend to parents or fans of women's fiction.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. ( )

One of the funniest books I have read this year. As I read Jen's commentary, I can almost hear my own voice in my head. She is everything I would have been if I was ever a class mom! And excellent first outing for a new author. I highly recommend this book!!! ( )

I enjoyed the narrative voice although it was definitely abrasive and offensive at times. Overall, I found the book amusing. Not sure if I will continue to read the series, however. ( )

This book is dedicated with love to my husband, Michael, and our daughters, Jamie and Misha.  Without the three of you, I would never have been a class mom.
