(4) | 6 | Haarlem, Netherlands, 1572. In her sister's courtyard, Kenau Hasselaar is butchering a hog before the April rain lashes the city of Haarlem. Amarron looks on, irritated by her dominating older sister banging on about the Spanish and the war. As Kenau works, they discuss the local boys who ran away to join a fleet of rogues and cutthroats--the Dutch Seabeggars. Only the shrewdest of souls conceive that the Spaniards creeping north up the coast are headed their way. Kenau is one of those souls. The king plans on uniting Holland by force. Kenau's shipbuilding business has thrived, despite the death of her husband some years back. She has much to lose--her children, family, means, and religious freedom. She knows that when the Spaniards arrive at the gates of Haarlem she cannot rely on the men to defend her; she must rally the women, sit tight, and fight back, or die a coward's death.… (mere) |

She knew each of their names and handed out a tiny fan to each lady, embroidered with the words Semper Fidelis, next to the Sea Beggar half moon, with Rather Turkish than Papist in Dutch on the other side. So whichever way the fan was held the user was Always Faithful. I imagined those words might have ruffled a few feathers amongst the more nervous magistrates. Reports of Alva marching up the country kept me awake every night. Word of Spanish atrocities and Dutch retaliation ran through our province like the salts. We poked sticks under our beds to flush out any hiding Spaniards before we slept. But still the Spanish threat approached us with all the certainty of a deadly fever. It deepened with news of the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre in France, when the butchering of our Huguenot brothers in Paris outraged every Protestant alive. . . . "Where are those Orangeists?" folk said, feeling abandoned. | |
