I liked the second book of this trilogy more than the first, as Arden's eclectic mix of history, fantasy, and Russian folk tales continues the saga of the young intrepid Vasya. She flees the small village setting of the first book, wanting to see the world on the back of her magical horse, Solovey, a present from her protector: the blue-eyed frost demon, the Winter King Morozko. Disguised as a boy, she comes across a malevolent evil spirit (Koloschei, the deathless), who is burning local villages and stealing young girls. Vasya heroic rescue of three such girls and routing of the bandits, draws the attention of her distant cousin, the Grand Prince of Moscow, and she is reunited with her priest brother, Sasha. Heralded as Vasilii the Brave, she must continue the masquerade in Moscow, while her sister Olga, plots to turn her back into a courtly wife. When Vasya sees the Tatar envoy is one of the bandits, she fears for her cousin's personal safety and rule. Her credibility is ruined when her true identity is revealed and she has to fight for her reputation, her freedom and her family. ( )

fiction - I enjoyed The Bear and the Nightingale, but the first several chapters of this story seems to follow the other characters in Moscow instead. It still might be a good story, but I had trouble getting into it. I quit on page 24. ( )

This book is a cold wake-up call for both Vasya and the readers that follow her story. From the thrill of nature and myth in The Bear and the Nightingale, we now follow our heroine into the world of the road and of Moscow. I have to say some of the 'surprises'/'twists' of this book could be seen fairly easily in advance, but the appeal of the story is that we see much through Vasya's eyes, and while she seems more than most, she also misses a great deal because of her lack of years. I need to process but if I could give this book more than five stars, I would. It's beautifully written with action and complex relationships. I love this one even more than the first. ( )

I loved the Bear and the Nightingale so much I was worried the second book in the series would not match it's greatness. It did and then some. ( )

The storm haze shrouds the sky
Spinning snowy whirlwinds
Now it howls like a beast
Now cries like a child
Suddenly rustles the rotten thatch
On our run-down roof
Now like a late traveler
It knocks at our window. - A.S. Pushkin
