An excellent book about depression that gets it's message across in tens of words. It's beautiful and haunting. If you've struggled with depression, it might make you feel less alone. ( )

A person is depicted running from dragons in a desolate environment. There doesn’t seem to be anywhere, or any way to escape. The character then falls, and as all hope seems to be lost, the person pulls themself from the ledge, and in doing so, finds a feather… sitting there on the ledge. This feather is black with white stripes. The character contemplates this… and the story ends.

A beautifully illustrated book that gives the reader the sense that they are being chased through its written and illustrated text, thus giving the reader an idea of what it feels like to deal with anxiety. I can use this book to stimulate empathy, and encourage understanding in my students when it comes to dealing with emotional issues, and mental health. It is also a good way of expressing how life is not black and white, and how hope can be found in any situation. ( )

In Night Shift Debi Gliori has used her own personal experience with depression to create moving pieces of art that really capture how depression can feel, the way it isolates you from the world and makes even simple everyday tasks seem impossible. But, more importantly, she also shows that the feelings don't last forever and that you can come out on the other side. Amazing book and great to add to your library. ( )

I picked this up at the library because it was classified as a graphic novel, but when I opened it at home I found it was an attempt to illustrate in children's picture book form what it is like to have depression. It was not what I expected and of minimal interest to me. ( )
