A group of young immigrant women in Boston in the 1900s deals with walking the fine line of old-world parents and being American women. As members of The Saturday Evening Girls Club, Caprice, Ada, Maria, and Thea have access to indispensable advice from women who want the best for them.

Jane Healey also wrote the amazing "The Beantown Girls" and I had very high hopes for this book. While the author obviously did her research and based her book on the real society of the same name, I feel the end was a letdown. I feel as if nothing was resolved and the future of the characters is left unknown. According to the author's website, she is not writing a sequel at this time and is happy with her ending. This was a fairly quick read and if you are looking for a story that is not too angsty but still has a decent amount of friction, then you would enjoy this. ( )

13.22%: Well, that didn't take long. Turned gay already on page 32. ( )

I didn't care for the anachronisms or the protagonist who never listened, leading to lots of plot-driving misunderstandings (couldn't the author have come up with a different mechanism?). I did like the window into life in early 1900s Boston. I didn't hate it, but I also didn't love it. ( )

The Saturday Evening Girls Club was an actual club for girls living in the tenements of the North End of Boston during the first half of the 20th Century. The North End is now known for it's history and great Italian food but unfortunately majority of the Italian immigrants have moved on to the suburbs.

The novel is a story of friendship of four young ladies who face many of the prejudice of religion, being female and national origin. ( )

This story isn't one of excitement but it sure is a very enjoyable read. The author has done a beautiful job of showing a glimpse into the thoughts and challenges of women in the beginning of the 20th century. It's a very pure read, suitable for readers of all ages. ( )
