I enjoyed reading this book since it gives a great lesson. Rabbit had always dreamed of riding to the moon yet he was not sure how he would do it. He tried everything he could and even asked for help yet everyone refused to help. One day Crane offered to help and bring him to the moon. Crane remembered how much others had helped him when he was learning how to fly and he wanted to do the same. Rabbit was finally on the moon, his long time wish was finally granted! This book is great in showing children to never give up and to try their best to reach that dream or goal that they may have. ( )

Rabbit and the Moon is an adaptation of a Cree legend about how Rabbit dreams of riding upon the moon and his attempts to achieve that dream. We see how important this dream of riding the moon and seeing the earth from above is to Rabbit through the lengths he goes to achieve his goal. Rabbit asks all the birds he can think of to take him to the moon, refusing to give up even after his attempts of jumping there failed. This is a wonderful example of not giving up on your dreams, no matter the obstacles and difficulties. After he is denied by all the birds he asked, Crane offers to take him after seeing Rabbit "bravely struggle" while trying to reach his dream. I love this lesson, people wanting to help others achieve their dreams and goals because, like Crane, they remember when others helped them achieve their own dreams. Crane brings Rabbit to the moon with Rabbit holding on to Crane's feet. This was another detail I greatly enjoyed, Rabbit's paws bled from holding onto Crane's feet. When he landed on the moon, Rabbit gifted Crane with a "red headdress" to thank Crane by placing his bleeding paw on Crane's head, explaining the red feathers that are on a crane's head. Also, Crane's legs became stretched out from carrying Rabbit, explaining the length of a crane's legs. The illustrations are really beautiful, showing the different birds, animals, and backgrounds of the story. I particularly enjoyed the illustrations that take place on the moon, the stars are very pretty. Overall, I enjoyed this folktale and would recommend it. ( )

I really enjoyed this story of a rabbit's determination to achieve its dream of seeing the earth from the moon. This story shows how anything is possible if you are truly determined to achieve it. This story is also about friendship which is observed between the rabbit and the crane. Folklore is also prevalent in this story because it tells how the crane got its long legs and tells how "the rabbit on the moon" occurred. Overall, this was a great read, and I feel students will enjoy the journey of the rabbit to achieve its dream. ( )

This book tells the story of a rabbit that never gave up on his dream of going to the the moon. I love how the author brings up the theme of friendship and perseverance in this book. Rabbit kept asking his friends and animals around him to help him get to the moon because it was his dream. Rabbit does not give up and in the end, he does reach the moon with the help of his good friend, Crane. I loved this book and the message it conveys. I would read this book to my students to encourage them to always follow their dreams and make them come true. ( )

Rabbit and the Moon is an "adaptation of a Cree legend." The incorporation of all the animals and nature aligns with the Native American culture. The red headdress that Rabbit gives Crane is also representative of their culture.
The author, Douglas, did a great job depicting the moon. I loved how he described a full moon as being "as round and full as Old Porcupine's belly." The message of friendship and reaching for your dreams was also clearly indicated throughout the book. Rabbit's multiple attempts to get someone to help him out showed his perseverance and unwillingness to give up on his dream. Finally, Crane, being a good friend, flew Rabbit to the moon. In return, Rabbit repays him with the headdress. This is a great story for children to learn about friendship and chasing your dreams. ( )
