She gives each character thorough backstories, gives the readers a complete understanding of the emotional and psychological make-up of the MCs and makes them thoroughly real and identifiable people. She also has a gift for building the romance to make it a proper relationship through her narration. Her books make us feel different emotions which is one of the things that we look for in satisfying reads. The other big plus (very big plus for us) is that she writes about mature (often 50 ) women. This is a demographic which deserves a lot of focus and we are so happy that Levig deals with them with sensitivity and love. Both aren't in the perfect place in their life to start a relationship, but, they find each other and have a one (and then two) night stand, and then slowly, but surely they find themselves getting closer and closer. Slowly each of the women's layers is peeled away (Jinx's are a little bit easier to pull away than EJ's). The two women also find out that EJ's son is marrying JInx's niece, which adds in both of their families. And those families add so very much drama to the whole thing. Oh, and did I mention this, Jinx was in jail for two decades before getting out three years before she and EJ meet. It's a novel full of starts and stops for the main relationship. On occasion the verbal arguments were just a little too much I thought. They got on my nerves. But, I loved the secondary characters like Taylor and Gwen (EJ's friends), and Reggie and Sparkle (Jinx's friends). And then there was the very, very cool subtext between Taylor and Gwent (sequel? Heh). That alone kept me reading until the end to see if it would have a payoff or not. It was a fun (and at times super angsty) book with lots of characters in it (in the big personality way, not the literal way). I got this advanced galley through Netgalley on behalf of Bold Strokes Books. ingen anmeldelser | tilføj en anmeldelse
Does love have a chance when no one knows she wants it? Jinx Tanner is an ex-con trying to piece together a life on the outside and heal her relationship with her half-sister who hasn't spoken to her in over twenty-five years. Romantic love is now here on her radar. E. J. Bastien is a business executive with her life and heart under control. She has a successful career, a woman in her bed whenever she wants one, and a healthy relationship with her grown children--as long as they don't find out she's gay. She has no desire for romantic entanglements. When these two women awaken after a one-night stand to find their lives inextricably entwined, love has its work cut out for it. This is a great book. EJ and Jinx are strong and likable leads and it is refreshing to see characters aged 52 and 45 in a romance novel.
They hook up in a bar for what should have been a one-night stand, only to find themselves thrown together in unlikely circumstances soon afterwards. What follows is a whole lot of angst and laughs and tears and some scorching sex as they work to build a relationship.
Also there's a puppy.
And it is really, really, good! ( )
