This is, quite simply, a wonderful book. The style is engaging while it remains informative. Frampton does an excellent job of balancing both presenting the historical context while introducing us to Montaigne and his "Essays". By the end of the book, you will be left saddened for the inevitable passing of Montaigne, the intervening 300+ years notwithstanding--and this from a non-dramatized biography. Frampton has done justice to Montaigne the mas as well as Montaigne the author, and done a service to the modern reader for having written this book. ( )
